The top priority is to stop the slaughterhouse. Then, we'll discuss responsibilities and exit strategies in detail. As far as those are concerned, nonetheless, let me state that I orient myself with the "The more you can, the more you must" principle, which I inherited from my dad. The wealthier, freer and more powerful you are, the more you must be held accountable. From here, peace can and must be achieved.

I was sincerely pleased when our governments collectively denounced Hamas's atrocities. I urge them to show similar strength in repudiating Netanyahu's missiles. As Europeans, we have the moral duty to oppose all retaliations against civilians. No act of terrorism should be overlooked. My statement endorses no weird position: I align with the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and most NGOs. And the bravest Israeli journalists, for that matters.

Slaughtering teenagers at a rave party is no act of decolonization. Bombing civilians you've clustered in an open-air prison is no legitimate response. Kidnapping and torturing non-military hostages is no step towards establishing a free Palestine, which I strive for. Leaving critical patients without water or electricity, if not suffocating them in their hospitals' rubble, is a war crime.

No previous injustice can give grounds for murdering unarmed people. If you manage to pull the trigger that kills a child, or cheer when said trigger is pulled by another assassin, you're a hideous, vile agent of horror. Those are the minimal moral lenses through which I'm trying to judge what's unfolding in Israel and Gaza.

here at UCL we have just received a "security alert" from a senior (panicky) manager in our Estates Team about possible "disruption" from #JustStopOil . Maybe I should send him this graph (courtesy of @[email protected]). We have to cut our emissions by ½ by 2030 and 80% by 2040…  This is not a rehearsal. So maybe it's time we focused our concerns about safety and security somewhere more appropriate? A bunch of pensioners with paintpots and glue aren't a risk to our "business model".

Whoa, this is so cool!! Life may have triggered #PlateTectonics. These researchers suggest that, about 2 1/2 billion years ago, bacteria caused iron to precipitate out of the oceans, depositing 1 km of heavy rock layers every million years, eventually punching through Earth's crust and initiating the plate tectonic cycle. Since then, plate tectonics has helped to stabilize Earth's climate. h/t @DrFunkySpoon https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2023GL103553
When string theorists started discussing the gravitational and model-building properties of stacked branes, nobody -as far as I know- proposed to call such states “lasagne”. It’s outrageous.
A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Prof. Juan Maldacena. We discussed the past, the present and -more importantly- the future of holography. On top of that, I had an enormous amount of fun! You can find the complete recording here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dczKVhn-tvc&feature=youtu.be
