I wrote about the clarifying power of simple declarations of basic truths and decency; how they show us what we stand for, and how they expose what indecent liars stand for.

Five thoughts on finding our direction in the Republican Party's Nazi America.

The Bishop and the Billionaire

Five directional thoughts to align ourselves for the fight ahead. Notice direction, fight upward, ladders downward, look inward, grow outward.

The Reframe

Anybody who today is still promoting generative models for business use despite their unreliability, error rates, biases, environmental impact, and costs simply isn’t ever going to change their mind. They’re going to be talking about how useful it is right up until the bubble bursts and then they’ll say they had always pointed out their limitations and pretend they were always “AI critics”

(It’s already happened, IMO. A number of people who label themselves “critics” are genuine AI hype people)

America is, politically, the oldest society on the planet -- every other country has changed political systems more recently. Thus it is like a very old person who still foolishly thinks of themselves as a young rebel.

If I had to characterize America as a single person it would be an 80 year old in a cowboy hat, touchy and armed but not with a gun (he can't see well enough to hit anything), with a grenade launcher. Whenever he gets angry or scared, he fires grenades at groups of people.

The US Supreme Court isn't really a court of law any more, in the sense that a European would think of one. The closest equivalent that I can think of is Iran's Guardian Council: a theocratic body with veto powers over basically all functions of government, dedicated to maintaining religious supremacy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardian_Council

Now my plan is to look into updating it after the bubble has burst and turn it into a “I fucking told you so” book after the fact.

Because I did fucking tell you so.

Been digesting the rise of the term "slop" for "AI" garbage for a bit and found I had to write about it:

"‘Slop’: the rhetorical gambit of framing failure as partial success"

'Slop': the rhetorical gambit of framing failure as partial success

Rob Horning’s essay Born Sloppy has been on my mind for the past week or so. Fixating on slop as a form of content, as a kind of necessary evil, a shipwreck that is invented with the ship, helps naturalize the inevitable proliferation of “AI” technology that doesn’t serve to improve the lives of most of the people exposed to it.

This is an EPIC rant and EVERY WORD OF IT IS TRUE. Seriously, set aside half an hour to read it! (Caution: contains expletives and LLMs.)

Great news everyone! I finally talk about AI hype. Someone finally mentioned LLMs one time too many, and the reckoning is upon us: https://ludic.mataroa.blog/blog/i-will-fucking-piledrive-you-if-you-mention-ai-again/

Are you a man who works in tech, writing code for a living? Do you work with women who do the same? Then you absolutely are at high risk of always assuming their code isn’t good enough… that you know more than they do, even when it’s their area of experience, even when they have years more experience than you do. Unless you are working to explicitly remove the sexism assumptions our society has drilled into you, you are also being sexist. That’s how culture works.

Please stop. Be introspective.

You can have a tech that is mostly used for fraud, bankrupts the elderly, or even literally kills people, but tech enthusiasts will defend it by saying it saves five minutes on their morning breakfast routine

It’s a worldview where individual benefit, no matter how trivial, trumps societal harm. There’s no arguing with people who respond to “this will destroy lives” with: “but I find it useful”
