Excruciatingly dull

@reay

A bit hacky. But Command+Clicking a link opens a tab right next to the one whose link you clicked. You could do this with an arbitrary link (assuming one exists) then re-use that new tab for whatever you need to do.

Frontend devs. Sweeties. Let's talk.

Do you remember the Web in the 90s? I do. My computer today has more RAM than my computer in the 90s had hard disk. My cable modem today can download that amount of data several times over every second.

The web today feels as slow today as it did in the 90s. On a 56k modem.

It's not your fault. I get it. Business demands, shifting frameworks. But engineer to engineer here, I'm really gonna need you to start telling them no. It's getting embarrassing.

If you are using AI coding tools, please copy your prompt into the generated code as a comment (or have your agent do that):
1. You wrote a precise requirement spec - why throw it away?
2. It'll help the next person understand the code.
3. It's good context for the AI when you revise the code, too.
4. It will help researchers who want to study these tools' accuracy and effectiveness.
5. It's a good way to label code as "AI-generated" or "AI-assisted".
Thank you.

World’s on fire, so here’s a short post about my favorite newsletters. https://ethanmarcotte.com/wrote/newslettered/

Eric wrote about his newsletter subscriptions, and asked some friends to do the same. Here’s my entry.

Why you shouldn't use AI-derived "facts" for anything serious, part 5912.

The galactic coordinates of the Orion Nebula are l~209º, b~-19º.

That puts it in the third galactic quadrant: the four quadrants are l=0–90º, 90–180º, 180–270º, & 270–360º.

Wikipedia has this correct, & yet Google's AI, citing that very source, says "nope, it's in the second galactic quadrant."

Just imagine how many actually important things this software is fucking up daily with its fake authoritativeness 🙄

5 months ago today I was laid off from my job and I am currently looking for my next senior front end developer role.

I have 19+ years of experience working with small agencies and Fortune 500 companies and focus on writing clean, accessible HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

If you're in the US, don't expect to ever see a non-stadium live show by a foreign band ever again, for this amongst other, more obvious reasons:

US may require visa applicants to post bond of up to $15,000

The State Department is proposing requiring applicants for business and tourist visas to post a bond of up to $15,000 to apply to enter the United States. It's a move that may make the process unaffordable for many. In a notice to be published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, the department says it will start a 12-month pilot program under which people from countries deemed to have high overstay rates and deficient internal document security controls could be required to post bonds of $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 when they apply for a visa. It says the countries affected will be listed once the program takes effect.

"If generative AI could REALLY make the next GTA in 6 months with 10 staff, or write the next bestseller, or produce 10 blockbusters a day? They wouldn't be trying to sell it to YOU. They would keep it for themselves and guard it from you ferociously."

I've seen this quote without attribution a couple of times. Whoever said it, they're spot on.

I assumed you knew. But that song is even older than I am. It probably gets more obscure the younger you are. Sorry I let you down.
