@CoMaps How is it any different than all the other osm-based apps?
@robinm @CoMaps
It's a fork of Organic Maps in order to adress the managing and transparency problems.
@Zekovski @robinm @CoMaps what were the problems around Organic Map ?
@lmaurice @robinm @CoMaps
Managing and transparency.
I have a forum post in french if you want.
@Zekovski @robinm @CoMaps Oui ça m'intéresse, merci
@lmaurice @Zekovski @CoMaps pareil, ça m'intéresse

Organic Maps vs. CoMaps - feddit.org

Hi, can anyone explain what the fuzz about organic maps [https://organicmaps.app/] and the fork CoMaps [https://www.comaps.app/]is all about? I mean Organic Maps forked maps.me [http://maps.me] and CoMaps forked Organic Maps. What is the reason behind the last fork? I’m too old to keep track 😩 EDIT: https://openletter.earth/open-letter-to-organic-maps-shareholders-a0bf770c [https://openletter.earth/open-letter-to-organic-maps-shareholders-a0bf770c] Community contributors to Organic Maps have expressed serious concerns about the project’s governance, transparency, and the potential for shareholder profit at the expense of the community.

@robinm @CoMaps it’s an Organic Maps fork. So for now, the difference would appear to be mainly in the way the project is governed.

@CoMaps Do you happen to have those governance structures documented anywhere?

Governance

Principles, decision-making, governance structure, etc.

@slothrop @robinm @CoMaps I'm no contributor but it looks like it's all in this codeberg repo

Codeberg.org

@robinm @CoMaps Based on what I've seen on their blog, CoMaps is a fork of Organic Maps that formed after some disputes in how the project is governed.

According to an ItsFoss post, a small group of 'shareholders' in OrganicMaps used the donation money for holiday trips and whatnot, and took decisions such as implementing Kayak, a closed-source (proprietary) travel agency and metasearch travel engine.

They also had some optional suggestions feature from some other travel engine for hotels, and they'd earn a commission if you enabled the feature and suppose, bought stuff through that feature? I don't know, I never used it.

@robinm @CoMaps It's quite barebones in terms of features, but if you want a butter smooth experience with a polished UI and easy navigation, this is it.

@CoMaps hi ! Love it so far, thanks for all the hard work!

Quick question, any chance we will be able in the foreseeable future to transfer data from organicMaps (or OsmAnd, if it's not too different). I've got some interest points I would like to keep

@Nclt @CoMaps I managed to export bookmarks from Organic Maps and import into CoMaps without any issue. The apps are very similar in their current state anyway. I don't know about OsmAnd though...
@jaumeros @CoMaps oh yeah I looked in the wrong place, thanks!
@Nclt @jaumeros @CoMaps let us know if gpx or kmz import isn't great from any particular app!

@CoMaps yay.🎉

While you are a fork from organicmaps, here's what I miss the most (and which is the reason I use other app):

There needs to be an option to make cycling trails much more visible. In its current state it is unusable for me.

@desirable_dialogue @CoMaps yes a cycle layer as option to add would make it perfect
@desirable_dialogue @CoMaps and in my region it doesn't even use the cycling trails for routing

@desirable_dialogue try pressing the Outdoor layer button, there's been some recent work making those paths more visible with more on the way.

@durchdiewelt it should prioritize anything with bicycle or cycleway tagging but it could definitely do a better job of picking dedicated trails or showing official regional routes, I really hope to improve that soon.

@CoMaps

@willbradley @durchdiewelt @CoMaps
> try pressing the Outdoor layer button, there's been some recent work making those paths more visible with more on the way.

I'm aware of it. Still unusable for me.

@desirable_dialogue @durchdiewelt @CoMaps are Organic Maps cycling trails more visible than CoMaps? Or are you talking about OsmAnd?
@willbradley @durchdiewelt @CoMaps
I mean the bad viability of cycling trails makes organic maps in this regard unusable for me.
In OsmAnd it is OK.
@desirable_dialogue @durchdiewelt @CoMaps by trails do you mean named regional routes? Or more like navigating cycle paths like they're streets for commuting?
@CoMaps
There are marked cycle paths on the maps? I can't see any in my region in Germany.
I compare it with an old version of mapy.cz and osmand
@willbradley @durchdiewelt @CoMaps
Yes to the first question.

The second question I don't fully understand.
@CoMaps installed, will evaluate. UI is cleaner than OsmAnd, colours less garish.
@CoMaps that will really be nice I can't wait to be among the top new users
@CoMaps A Flathub release would be nice for Linux mobile coverage :)
@pi_crew @CoMaps true.
So far I'm using open street map desktop app. #mobilelinux doesn't have too many options so far.
@Oleksii
Actually Organic Maps has a beta flatpak release so it seems possible. And it seems they also plan a release: https://codeberg.org/comaps/comaps/issues/548
@pi_crew @CoMaps
[Linux] Publish on Flathub

Hi! I am really glad that you created completely noncommercial project! I already ditched donations to Organic Maps and now considering starting to donate to you (I will wait a little to be sure that project will continue living :) ) But let's get back to topic. Will you consider publ...

Codeberg.org
@rugk @pi_crew @CoMaps
Thank you for sharing. I hope it'll be #mobileLinux UI friendly
@Oleksii @rugk @CoMaps I tested earlier version on my OnePlus6 #postmarketOS phone and it is more a desktop app than a mobile version in the current state. iOS and Android versions seem to be far more developed
@pi_crew @Oleksii @CoMaps hmm but it's not it the same code base?
@rugk @Oleksii @CoMaps not the UI part I guess
@pi_crew @rugk @Oleksii @CoMaps the Linux UI is Qt while Android is Java, but sharing a C++ core. Help improving the Qt UI for desktop and mobile is greatly sought after!
@CoMaps 🎉
I was only waiting for the release on iOS, such a good news :)
Do you know if there is a way to migrate data from OrganicMaps, such as waypoints?
@CoMaps Found it! Migration done in 5s, thanks open file formats and interoperability
@CoMaps difference between comaps and organic maps can anyone provide me a answer

@JBrickelt963 @quantum I noticed a difference: on organic map, there voice an option to get routing instruction by a voice, It seems it does not exist on Comaps. Can you confirm ?

@MonetPhil @quantum Yes.

@quantum
CoMaps is forked from Organic after a dispute and some uncertainty about the future of Organic.

@CoMaps Congrats on the launch. Love the privacy-first, open-source approach. Can’t wait to try CoMaps
@CoMaps i would strongly recommend a online maps service if possible.
At least the default active option of doing that!
I'm pretty sure most users would nag the fact that by default the app is unusable without the prior download of maps!
@CoMaps There's no FAQ on the website, nor anything about why I might switch away from the 'real' open source map; Open Street Map for Android, (Osmand).
So why would it be in my interest to change to your app?
@greenpete @CoMaps There is no official OpenStreetMap app, both CoMaps and OSMAnd are downstream data users and both contribute back to OpenStreetMap.
The FAQ is under "help": https://www.comaps.app/support/

CoMaps - F.A.Q.

@greenpete @CoMaps

As a user, I find Organic(and now CoMaps) simpler to operate. For some reason, it also seems to handle addresses better. OsmAnd is like flying an airplane with all the controls.

I have both CoMaps and OsmAnd installed. CoMaps when I want to get somewhere quickly, and OsmAnd when I want to sit down and study.

@lxskllr Yes, I think I know what you mean.
I tried Organic maps way back, but was already enjoying Osmand, but I remember Organic being simpler, and dealing with address searches better.
I love the nautical mode in Osmand. I still use proper charts for navigation, but Osmand is really good for finding all sorts of marine things. It's ridiculously accurate in the small creeks where charts don't even cover!
Thanks! 👍
@CoMaps

@CoMaps @egghat Thank you!

How about #Carplay?

@fxdx @CoMaps @egghat AFAIK we're waiting on Apple to grant carplay entitlement so we can enable it :)
