Sociologist interested in family, work, and gender equality

Associate Professor of Family and Consumer Studies at the University of Utah.

Clark Griswold and Bandit Healer are my role models!

Richard Petts and I will be launching our @CCF_Families symposium on COVID-19 and the Future of Gender Equality on 11/14. Here is a video preview. Each day until launch, we will post a new video abstract for a different symposium briefing paper. Check it out and please share!

If you teach social statistics or research methods, and you are not teaching students about skip logics and branching in surveys you are doing them a disservice.

Most of my graduate students come to me with no idea that survey ?s are not asked of every respondent

This leads to major problems - the biggest being a huge loss of cases when coding.

We should teach all students to read through the survey looking for skips and how to recode by incorporating information from multiple variables

U.S. life expectancy drops again. It's now down 2.4 years from 2019, and at its lowest since 1996. https://www.statnews.com/2022/12/22/us-life-expectancy-falls-covid-drug-overdose-deaths/.
U.S. life expectancy falls for second straight year as drug overdose and Covid deaths take toll

Deaths from Covid-19 and drug overdoses drove U.S. life expectancy to fall to 76.4 years in 2021, the lowest level since 1996.

Devastating #demography fact a day: Drug overdose deaths in the USA rose 14% from 2020 to 2021 from 28.3 to 32.4 deaths per 100,000 people (age-adjusted). https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db457.htm

We need more career-line faculty at R1 universities (benefit eligible teaching profs). There is nothing wrong with having some faculty focus on research/grad training and some focus on UG teaching. What's wrong is ignoring UG instructors value and denying them $ security.

New research in JMF shows that fathers' domestic performance is significantly related to their children's gender ideologies, above and beyond their own gender attitudes.

#introduction

I am a sociologist studying gender, work, and family issues. I am currently working on an NSF funded project examining changes in the gendered division of labor in families during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Looking to connect with sociologists and other work-family scholars.

I post about research, fatherhood, politics, and sports.

Now for the bad news:

As the military industrial complex continues to feast, the expansion of the Child Tax Credit that went into effect for 2021 was not included in the $1.7 trillion federal spending bill.

Endless money for war. No money for hungry kids or working families.

Our 7yo drew this at school. She draws at home sometimes but its not a passion pastime for her. Didn't really know how talented she was.
