Open Admissions

This year I'm directing our visiting writers & scholars program & I couldn't be more excited about our first event! Oct. 11 @ 4:30, Dr. Chelsea Mikael Frazier will give a talk on "Black Feminist Ecology: Origins." Please join us & spread the word!
The assignment I’m most looking forward to this semester! Students are making 1 pg graphic memoirs inspired by Persepolis that connect their lives to broader social, historical, and political events. I made this one to show them an example (& to figure out how to teach it).

Super excited for my graduate seminar on Black Feminist Criticism this fall! We're starting with Alice Walker's "In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens" & looking at quilts by Faith Ringgold and Bisa Butler.

Some highlights: we'll be reading Sister Outsider & Teaching to Transgress; Chelsea Mikael Frazier will give a guest lecture/public talk on Black feminist ecological thought; and students will design the second half of the course.

The syllabus and website are public for anyone who wants to follow along!

Black Feminist Criticism – SUNY Cortland | Fall 2023

During #BlackAugust it is important to remember the individuals who fought tirelessly to better the lives of Black people. This next #CORESpotlight does just that. Danica Savonick reflects on bell hooks's radical pedagogy and legacy here: https://hcommons.org/deposits/item/hc:43617/.

Writing for the day - working with some students to write up a piece on the pedagogy unit from the Praxis Program. Has involved rereading @danicasavonick's great piece on “Teaching DH on a Shoestring: Minimalist Digital Humanities Pedagogy" - love the seven strategies for minimalist DH course design that she outlines there.

Our article, co-authored with Laura Kane and Amanda Licastro (@amandalicastro), about digital publishing as feminist praxis is now live!

It draws on our experiences as editors of the Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy to explore how feminist approaches to digital publishing can help expand what counts as "knowledge" in academia.
