@deboraha I firmly believe that statistics as a discipline survives in pop culture only because the stats gays write queer footnotes
I don’t know how many people who follow me get gel nails done (or do them at home) but please read up on acrylate allergies if you do. It’s an easy, painful allergy to get, especially from home gel kits, and once you do, it can ruin your life. You will not be able to get most dental work, or implants that need to be adhered to bone (like hip/joint replacements). Even surgical glue to close incisions. Plus so much more: acrylates are in so many common products, from utensils to hair gels.

Fediverse folks:

Using cutesy extended font tricks like ₜₕᵢₛ basically triggers a denial of service attack on folks who use screen readers.

Instead of saying "this" it says "Mathematical Sans-Serif Italic Small T Mathematical Sans-Serif Italic Small H Mathematical Sans-Serif Italic Small I Mathematical Sans-Serif Italic Small S"

Let's be cool the folks who have to use screen readers to participate in our community and don't do that.

(This is another case in which quote tweeting would’ve been helpful.)

What’s this image, you ask?

I took @coatless’s Quarto WebR demo Qmd.

Rendered it to standalone HTML.

Changed where it loads WebR from and pointed the init to local-to-app `/`.

Stuck it in the macOS (for lack of a better term) “WebR Shell” app.

Had it default to the new “webr-demo.html” page.

And. It. Works.

Soon, you’ll be able to create full-on macOS, iOS, iPadOS local WebR apps *just from Quarto docs* (this was the reason I’ve been working on this).

James is amazing.

I strongly suspect that #AI is currently at the point self-driving cars reached around five years ago. After a huge amount of investment and some rapid (and impressive) advances, it seemed to many like full self-driving was within reach. But that didn’t happen.

Instead, the problem turned out to be much more difficult than anticipated, and progress slowed as we learned more about the weaknesses and drawbacks of existing systems. I have no doubt that progress towards #AGI will be much the same.

Can AI generate a way to pay for itself?

AI is expensive to make. Maybe all the hype around replacing people is just a story investors are telling — because they’re hoping to get rich. Is that real?

I wrote a short paper on the Nature endorsement of Biden and the paper published a few days ago that purported to find it reduced trust in science

Dan Hicks - The Nature endorsement and the value-free ideal

In October 2020, Nature published an editorial endorsing Joe Biden and criticizing Trump (“Why Nature Supports Joe Biden for US President” 2020).
