Pollen viabilities and gene expression profiles across Musa genomes 🍌 https://academic.oup.com/aobpla/article/15/4/plad052/7234298

A new study has unlocked extensive insights about banana pollination. It found that the viability, germination, and development-related gene expression of pollen vary across different Musa, or banana, cultivars. This vital information may boost banana breeding programmes and prevent the unwanted production of seeded bananas. #Botany #BotanyAI

Pollen viabilities and gene expression profiles across Musa genomes

Bananas (Musa genus) possess high pollen viability and germination rates, resulting in the production of seeded fruit, which is undesirable for the market.

Overnight train ride from Sacramento to the Colorado Rockies on the California Zephyr!
Most folks I know who are worried about AI aren’t worried about these programs becoming self aware and oppressing us. That’s not a thing. We’re worried about all the ways these systems will ramp up existing inequalities and further obliterate our shared reality as human beings. That’s already happening.

Water = climate.
If we fail to limit warming to 1.5° degrees, an increase to 2° will DOUBLE the population vulnerable to water scarcity.

I’m genuinely so happy to finally be part of a team that invests in proper PRs and code review! 🤓

MOA for the functional differences between Anandamide and 2-AG

Somatic and terminal CB1 receptors are differentially coupled to voltage-gated sodium channels in neocortical neurons

Steiger et al. show anandamide acts on somatic, but not axonal, CB1 to inhibit sodium channels with high efficacy. The mechanism reduces neuronal excitability and contributes to the regional specificity and compartmentalization of the actions of different endocannabinoids.

Less is more (well, it’s actually the exact same, otherwise there’d be data integrity issues) in today’s Drop as we focus on making various things smaller.

Drop #224 (2023-03-21)

How Low Can You Go?

— svgo/pngcrush: slim down those images!

— TinyVG: shiny new “binary SVG” format (cc: @coolbutuseless)

— (Docker)Slim: put your containers on a diet

— vim/gzexe: two tips you may not know about

So, yeah, that's why I talk about bikes (especially ebikes, double-especially cargo ebikes) so much. As you hear about the #IPCC report today, I'd urge you to: (1) write your local city council and urge them to add protected bike lanes in your city, even if you do not bike yourself, and (2) think about what you can do to have a meaningful effect on climate change, even if it's something small and local, that could matter over time. And (3) go try an ebike!

I have to remember that, because #Mastodon doesn't have #algorithm curated feeds, I have to #boost / reblog interesting people more often. Liking their posts doesn't make them more visible.

Also, if you want to find new people, I use the #Welcome hashtag whenever I say hi to a new person who posted an #Introduction. I try to greet interesting people pretty frequently.

Love y'all! Keep being kind! 💜

I’ve now made it (hopefully) “easy” to try out #RStats #WebR ReefR — the bonkers reactive framework I threw together today.

— fork https://github.com/hrbrmstr/reefr-template
— make the suggested changes including `SW_URL`!!!
- deploy to GH Pages (or your own server, but it’s configured to use r-wasm site’s webr)
— …
— profit? (or, go mad, mebbe)

If you like it and have ideas, please drop issues.

I’ll add JS/WebR helpers over the next couple weeks.
