Imagine if we did meeting introductions with the same hype as that used to introduce the starting lineup at a basketball game.
The cognitive dissonance of working in tech, while the rest of the world is experiencing a record seller’s market for labor. It’s like being in an alternate reality.
When I was a software engineer, my output was solutions — usually, though not exclusively, in the form of software.
As a manager of engineers, my output is an environment in which others can create effective solutions. My inputs are focus, direction, context, challenge, recognition, accountability, and (most importantly) compassion.
I really love mentoring senior engineers. I love mentoring junior engineering managers even more, and I love mentoring junior engineers most of all. Not sure what this says about me, but it’s the truth.
Nobody goes into leadership because they love writing promotion packets.
