Mass car use is geometrically incompatible with great cities. Transit and bikes are the future. Does tech things sometimes. Not entirely sure how I will be using Mastodon yet.

We love Muni. With hundreds of thousands of rides daily, Muni connects thousands of San Franciscans to friends, family, employment, school, and vital services.

That’s why we want to not only keep it running but make it better: frequent buses; maintaining and improving access to schools, libraries, and parks; and extend discounts like Free Muni for Youth.

So we’re introducing the Community Transit Act, a ballot initiative which will generate up to $30M per year for Muni operations by taxing ride-share companies like Uber, Lyft, and Waymo.

To get on the November ballot, we need to gather signatures from over 10,000 registered SF voters by July 8. We’re a grassroots coalition, made up of volunteers like yourself, and we need people like you to help gather signatures, organize, and get the word out. To get involved:

1. Follow us at @sftransitact
2. Sign up here for email updates and volunteer opportunities: https://www.sftransitact.com/get-involved
3. Share with your friends!

To the @RecParkSF
volunteer driving a black BMW around 2:40pm on Arguello: 🤌 means "What do you want?," pronounced in sarcastic Italian accent; roughly translates to "WTF?" This is an appropriate response from a biker you almost hit as you pulled into the bike lane w/o looking.

It does not translate into "speed around me, and then serve into the bike lane to do a break check." Nor does it translate to "speed away and do a wild left turn on to Cabrillo in front of on-coming traffic." Apparently you find volunteering to be a very stressful experience.

Like jazz? The last day of the Fillmore Jazz Festival is today, and while I can't make the morning, I am super excited to catch SLUGish Ensemble at 2:30pm, on the California Stage. Jazz-funk, cyclic melodies, and acid-inspired synth lines.

Folks, this march is going to be super fucking lit. The art is top-notch, the written words excellent, and there will be a brass band. Absolutely mad work by amazing people in a very short time.

SF rally has moved across Polk St to the west end of Civic Center Plaza. Still in front of the City Hall steps - just across the street.

Speakers include Sen Wiener, Mayor Breed, Sup Preston, Sup Mandelman, advocate Nayeli Maxson Velazquez, and rider Luis Castillo, all MCed by advocate Jaime Viloria.

Now that things are pretty much set for tomorrow, and there doesn't seem to be any huge holes in the plan, it's hard not to reflect on how much effort and time people are spending desperately trying to save public transit -- yet most people I talk to are totally unaware there is even an eminent threat. Everyone "knows" that BART is the second level of hell, but no one knows it could basically go away.

State leaders have failed to offer a concrete plan for transit funding. Bay Area agencies will be forced to reduce service levels. The result: mass congestion, a new barrier to economic recovery, and huge set back for climate goals.

JOIN US SATURDAY TO DEMAND BETTER!

11AM: Oakland march starting at 19th St. BART.
1PM: SF march starting at UN Plaza.
1:30PM: Rally at SF City Hall steps with electeds and advocates.

Speakers include Scott Wiener, Dean Preston, and local advocates.

Can't make it? There are a few other ways to reach out and touch a legislator:

Save California transit - call top decisionmakers now

Public transportation systems across California are facing major budget shortfalls in the aftermath of the pandemic. If not addressed with state funding, agencies will be forced to implement devastating, potentially irrecoverable service cuts that pose a devastating threat to California’s future. We need to burn up the phone lines of Governor Newsom and the top legislative leaders to let them know they must provide finding to save public transportation by the June 15 midnight budget deadline.   Subject: Take Action: Save California transit - call top decisionmakers now Friend, I took an action on Action Network called Save California transit - call top decisionmakers now. Improvements on Geary east of Stanyan gave us 18% FASTER 38/38R trips, and a SAFER road with 81% less excessive speeding. The @sfmta_muni plan will extend these benefits from Stanyan to 34th and it is time to finish the job on a FASTER, SAFER, GEARY.

https://actionnetwork.org/letters/faster-safer-geary/

We are asking the @sfmta_muni Board to approve the full and timely completion of the project as recommended by SFMTA staff, including the completion of transit lanes in 2023.

Why is this important? A thread:

Faster Safer Geary - write your Supervisor and the SFMTA Board

The Geary Boulevard improvement Project extends transit lanes and pedestrian safety improvements from Stanyan to 34th Ave along Geary. The first part of this project was completed in 2021 east of Stanyan and reduced the travel time of 38/38R by 18%. Further, the road treatments and pedestrian improvements lead to an 81% drop in excessive speeding! Join us in supporting the SFMTA’s plan to bring these benefits to the next section of Geary, from Stanyan to 34th Ave.

(I say this as a non-member; but mad respect.)
People who endlessly shit on SF DSA clearly aren't politically involved much on the ground themselves. If they were, they would understand the SF DSA members are some of the most dedicated and committed people when it comes to many types of change, both incrementalist and radical.

As highways continue to get money and barely anyone bats an eye, our many of our representatives hem and haw over making sure transit doesn't die. Phil Ting's office needs to hear from you, forcefully, that the future isn't oil, it's not cars, and sustainable transit for all, and that letting transit die now is a form of climate denialism.

Phil Ting's office: (415) 557-2312

Give your name, and how you use public transit, and what would happen to you if operations are cut. Ask Ting to support Senator Wiener's transit operations plan.

There are two important events on the near horizon in the fight for state transit operations funding:

5/12: 12:30-2pm, Phil Ting Budget Town Hall.
Phil Ting represents the Westside of SF in the Assembly and is the Chair of the Budget Committee. He has sig power over the final form of the state budget.

You'll need to both RSVP on Ting's site, and then also let the state-wide Survive and Thrive campaign know you are coming. There will only be one speaker per-org allowed - if you represent an org, DM me.

Ting RSVP: https://lcmspubcontact.lc.ca.gov/PublicLCMS/rsvp_main.php?district=AD19&rsvp=1304

5/16, 10:30am-?, Rally and Legislative Visits in Sacramento. The rally will be short (~20m), but more attendance the better. After the rally, we will split into groups to visit legislators across the capital complex.

RSVP required; there will be training this weekend or next Monday: https://actionnetwork.org/events/survive-and-thrive-sacramento-rally-and-lobby-day/
