Hi @miketarrant ! 🙂

Listening to an episode of Hard Fork where they’re talking about the obvious coming problem of AI training on scraped web data from a web increasingly generated by AI. It’ll be like the squeal of microphone feedback.

Also apparently pre-2022 scraped data sets are getting more valuable, like scavenging low-background steel from old WWII shipwrecks because they were made before the first nuclear bomb went off and contaminated everything

Must be nice to own your own Supreme Court justice.

Another SCOTUS scandal, per @LeverNews.
Justice Clarence Thomas voted to end federal tenant protections that his billionaire benefactor Harlan Crow’s company says threatened its real estate profit margins.
And another case is coming soon!

In memorial: @carolynvs, who devoted her open source career to making many projects more welcoming to contributors. Simply an amazing person. I'm going to miss her.

@mekkaokereke @mjausson we often say in our fedi admins chat that new admins should have something like being presented with a selection of blocklists from the get go and can choose one to import rather than having to find out the hard way that they should be importing one, then having to find one, see if it's trustworthy, etc. Right now the process involves too much 'find out the hard way' or 'already been on fedi long enough to know you need one' and that's not great for new people.

The debt limit sprains the both sides brain.

Read Dan Froomkin:

"Extremist Republicans have been enabled by media coverage that tries to split the difference, and treats what is essentially a hostage crisis created exclusively by one side as a normal, two-sided partisan squabble. Indeed, our top political reporters now insist that the onus is on Biden to solve the problem."

The nation is not “barreling toward default,” nor is it “careening,” or even “drifting” there. It is being pushed there by Republicans.

So the WHO is finally saying it out loud:

One in ten covid infections will need long term care.

As a #DnD player, I can tell you this is way more likely than it seems at first.

If infected with covid, and you roll 1 on a 1d10:
Gain a permanent level of exhaustion.

So wear a mask.
Get a decent modifier on your Constitution saving throw against infection.

I'm so delighted we can finally announce this today, proud of the work my team put in, and yet sad to live in a world where we know it's needed: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/04/eff-now-has-tor-onions
