gnu tar uses a remote machine's tape drive if the filename is <host>:<path>. the --force-local flag disables this behavior.
Tried to read a blog on Substack just now. Asked to subscribe. The "no thanks" and close buttons don't work since I have JavaScript disabled. Figured out that if I add random garbage to the end of the URL it would say "page not found" and give me a list of posts, which is exactly what I want, and I can read from there. lol
