@ferrix @ben until capitalism is forced to suicide, maybe
@ben it's 2026. Most of the world has stopped using cheques for anything 30 years, and for regular payments 40-50 years ago. If cheques are still a security risk where you live, then that's because the banks make money through all the problems cheques have and thus won't let it die.
@ben This is also in the same neighborhood as BP's insidious "personal carbon footprint" propaganda campaign. I don't have a carbon footprint, because I don't own any oil or gas wells or coal mines.
@ben seriously is there some kind of viciously litigious and vengeful consumer interest group we can assemble to make this stance mainstream? it’s ridiculous that we’re expected to clean up after these rich shitheads’ scornful abuse of us

My bank emailed me "AI is changing check fraud. Here's what you can do to protect yourself."

Nonono, Mr. Banky-bank. Tell me what YOU are doing to protect me against check fraud. This is a you problem, caused by a system you designed and run. How about you don't externalize that cost onto me?

I have, since the 1980s, DESPISED any excuse like "oh sorry we got a new computer system" or "we can't do X anymore because of the computer". How you do business isn't my fucking problem. Don't give me excuses for not having your shit together.

This is the same as "we are experiencing unexpectedly high call volume." Well, that's pretty fucking poor planning on your part, then, innit? Hold times aren't long because of the forces of nature, they are because you're too fucking cheap to pay sufficient staff.

@ben Same MO as "identity theft". No, my identity wasn't stolen. The bank allowed itself to be tricked into opening an account. I'm only involved because the bank's own negligence allowed it to think I was involved. They should have to compensate me for that. If they want to go after the fraudster to try to recover that, that's between them and the fraudster.
@jaykuo more evidence these reptiles’ punishments need to start being terminal

So-called age verification for social media is spreading across the world, framed as an effort to create a safer internet for children. In reality, age verification lays the foundation for a fully controlled internet.

The age verification rush must be slowed down, and politicians need to recognize the consequences of different types of legislation and systems.
