How the media gaslights people on #COVID19:

In one article, it says, “The uptick of cases likely isn’t cause for alarm, though: most Covid cases are mild” and then buries this quote from an epidemiologist: “Covid is likely to remain in the leading causes of death in the United States for the foreseeable future.”

If a leading cause of death can be easily prevented with simple mitigations, then how is ANY uptick in cases not a reason for concern?

Covid Cases Are On The Rise—Here’s What You Need To Know

Covid cases are back on the rise just before the upcoming flu season rolls in.

How can our #USPol national journalism outlets do so many stories on the extreme heat and #climatechange issues day after day without the accountability piece: what can be done, who holds power to act, and what are they doing about it? Where are we on the big steps proposed and, as a society, on responding seriously? Covering weather vs. focusing on human role and solutions is ultimate example of incremental #journalism reacting to events vs. holding power to account.

Jazz. NW DC Record Store. Howard University alumni. Vice Presidential visit. Seems pretty cool to me.

No one was more surprised by the VP's short-notice visit to HR (Home Rule) Records on Thursday than the Brightwood Park shop's owner, Charvis Campbell.

You asked for it, and it’s coming. Quote posts, search, and groups are on their way. In the meantime, check out the new onboarding experience launching today. https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/05/a-new-onboarding-experience-on-mastodon/
A new onboarding experience on Mastodon

Today we’re making signing up on Mastodon easier than ever before. We understand that deciding which Mastodon service provider to kick off your experience with can be confusing. We know this is a completely new concept for many people, since traditionally the platform and the service provider are one and the same. This choice is what makes Mastodon different from existing social networks, but it also presents a unique onboarding challenge. To make this step easier, we now have a default sign-up option that works with a server we operate. If you wish to leave or join a different server, you can do so at any time.

Too late for February, but some great Black history just the same. Congratulations to Vietnam Veteran and Alexandria, VA resident Col. Paris Davis on his long-awaited Medal of Honor.

Thank you so much for your service!

Black Vietnam vet finally awarded Medal of Honor for bravery

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly 60 years after he was recommended for the nation’s highest military award, retired Col. Paris Davis, one of the first Black officers to lead a Special Forces team in combat, received the Medal of Honor on Friday for his bravery in the Vietnam War.

Just realized it's now been two months since I was locked out of Twitter for factual reporting. I could delete the (non-rule-breaking) tweet and go back but, to be honest, I just don't feel any real desire to. It's a social network built for one, and not a place where you can trust that real reporting won't be punished on a whim. Every tweet supports a place that's hostile to what we do. Why enable that?

My column about apps on Mastodon appears in print today. I'm told it did very well on the web after publishing on Friday. It got MANY boosts and Favorites here on Mastodon (thank you!), so I assume that's where a lot of traffic came from. It'll be very interesting to see what kind of print-reader feedback I get via email.

This is a gift link to the story, so it should get at least some of you past the paywall if you don't have a subscription. If not, use archive.ph.

NASA doesn’t usually allow animals in portraits.

But in 2009, astronaut Leland Melvin snuck his adorable rescue dogs, Jake & Scout, into Johnson #Space Center for his official picture.

In addition to going on 2 space missions, Melvin had been drafted into the NFL. He’s now an advocate for STEAM education & animal welfare. https://www.lelandmelvin.com

Sadly, Jake & Scout passed away, but when Melvin published his 2017 memoir Chasing Space, he chose this wonderful photo for the cover. #HistoryRemix

I don't feel as strongly about quote posts as I did in 2018. Personally, I am not a fan, but there is clearly a lot of demand for it. We're considering it.
