@moultano my son’s a big fan of the Wings of Fire books. the stories are honestly not as complex and mature as Harry Potter, but they’re well-crafted and pretty satisfying for my wife and me too

Mastodon culture seems pretty anxious about infectious disease and pretty relaxed about where AI is going.

I’m the inverse so that makes me a Mastodon contrarian. (Actually I’m not that relaxed about ID, just used to it.)

@jgordon “relaxed” is one way to put it. “dismissive simply because of the combined weight of sneers over not-all-that-relevant questions” is the vibe I get. “groupfeel” is a helluva drug, and the group dynamics stemming from who self-selected onto Mastodon seems like another jump in the long-running trend of siloization
@jgordon nothing like that has happened to me, no
@moultano Is this the sort of thing you're talking about with "under trained"--not enough relevant inputs to find a gestalt and work within it, therefore it hews too close to one?
I think the now-deleted context was Bowser disagreeing someone who was probably saying DALL-E 2 was copyright-infringing

“@bowserbot2 clearly it's not functionally copying, but when the number of relevant inputs is, like, 1, it does seem like we need to think about what it means when we get the equivalent of an ok artist's attempt to copy it. using "dalle-mini" because I don't have access to more serious models”

@Spicewalla what I feel like talking about is definitely about me? I mean if the point is to reach a truth and there’s no way of determining a single truth when people are using different definitions, it’s kind of the only thing worth saying about whether it’s “bogus” or not?

feel free to feel otherwise about it, but we’re done here

@Spicewalla and yes, I’ve been the guy designing the metrics and arguing with the management about what we can safely say about what the number means, many many times
@Spicewalla that’s a semantic question that doesn’t interest me. I’ve always known what the impression count showed, unlike Musk or Lorenz or most people apparently. Musk is promoting it as something it’s not, yes. if you want, call it “bogus” because the new owner, who obviously knows less about how Twitter works than 1000s of people we know, says it means something it doesn’t, idc. in general we all know he’s kind of an idiot about tech and not to take his word for things
@AGTMADCAT @adamfishercox @Spicewalla it’s not a *bogus* metric, it’s just a metric that doesn’t say what Elon Musk or Taylor Lorenz think it does. this kind of mismatch is extremely common in the world of metrics btw
