I always find this bit difficult because I don't know what's a defining characteristic for me.

Medley No 3

Gentle Reader I was attending a friend’s birthday celebration last week and as we are mostly over the 60th birthday the raucous evening’s carousing has been replaced with a lunch and much gentle carouse of 2 or 5 drinks in a pub afterward. This is very civilised and means that I can head home for a nap. There seems to be a lot of birthdays during the first 4 months of the year.

Sophistication

Gentle Reader Sometimes when I order a cup of tea in a café, restaurant or pub I get a little biscuit1 with it. It sits there on the saucer, sometimes naked, sometimes in a cellophane packet, and I feel a ridiculous sense of pleasure. I always associate this with going to the more upmarket places, though I never go to any real upmarket places.

Hi #fediverse. We need to talk about something.

While talking to a colleague about how I recently learned most people have never sat on a cow it came up that she has never sat on a horse. Like, not even once during childhood.

Another colleague admitted they also have never sat on a horse.

My hypothesis is that most people have at one point in their life sat on a horse.

Have you sat on a horse?

Presents

Gentle Reader There are people who have the talent for gift giving. One is my sister-in-law, J, who always seems to be able to give things people are pleased to receive. Another person I discovered recently, was a work colleague, S, who arranged my leaving gifts. I was so impressed I shall list them. A bib. I am notoriously a messy eater.

Ig Nobels to move awards to Europe due to concern over US travel visas
https://www.theguardian.com/science/2026/mar/09/ig-nobel-prize-europe

> The annual Ig Nobels, a satirical award for scientific achievement, are shifting for the first time from the US to Europe due to concerns about attendees getting visas, organizers announced on Monday.

That story again:

Even parody Nobel committee recognizes how dangerous it is to travel to the USA these days. If your conference doesn't, your conference is less serious than parody Nobels. 🤡

Scientific awards – which honor research that makes people laugh and then think – to move away from ‘unsafe’ US

A professor has published a book about women's writing during the Middle Ages. The encyclopedia has 340 entries about women writers, transcribers and patrons amongst others. They cover different continents. The author states that for too long women's voices have been dismissed or even erased from literary history. https://www.medievalists.net/2026/02/new-encyclopedia-highlights-medieval-womens-writing-around-the-world/
