It's fascinating that, given our modern-day social media obsession, globally dispersed projects can relate through materials and form. Inspiration or coincidence? This arts centre in Brighton, UK, resembles The Pheonix building in Sydney, by Durbach Block Jaggers and John Wardle Architects. It begs whether contextual response is a thing these days or if material internationalism exists. https://buff.ly/3RhYmdx

Gen AI is a hot topic in academia. Used badly, students ignore course material, reduce learning practice and regurgitate false information. However, the LX lab at UTS are exploring AI to personalise and synchronise study plans to help address inclusivity and equity in higher education. It is not clear yet how human experts fit into this beneficial data loop, but I hope that this ethical question is part of the wider LX Lab project.

The race for data in companies may lead to a neglect of ethics and human care. Some companies are using AI not just to cut labor costs but to extract knowledge from employees, viewing them as data sources rather than individuals with identities and social connections. This unethical approach prioritises profit over human consequences, exploiting the data loop for growth. Some companies resist this trend, while others prioritise growth over ethical considerations. https://buff.ly/3WB285e
Can I take your order – and your data? The hidden reason retailers are replacing staff with AI bots

Human staff accumulate data as ‘expertise’ instead of giving it to their employers. For profit-chasing retailers, that’s a problem AI can eliminate.

I really enjoy the Gorilla Sun newsletter from Ahmad Moussa. He is a generative artist and curates interesting information about computational art and web technologies. He recent newsletter poses some interesting opinions which I think succinctly encapsulate the current AI discourse.

AI doesn't suck. Companies suck.
AI doesn't suck. People suck.
AI doesn't suck. Capitalism sucks.

Do you agree?

Apart from global inequality, dereliction through ownership is one of the greatest tragedies of Neo-liberal Capitalism. The fact that a beautiful island such as South Molle can be deserted and left to rot based on economics is a indictment of our failed responsibility to protect the environment. Why do we prioritise profit over our surroundings? If we were truly caring for the land, we would not impose human settlement on these environments. https://buff.ly/3QBlkMs
Queensland island resort successes and failures, can a sustainable future save those sitting idle?

From failed visions of lavish destinations to cyclone damage so severe redevelopment was abandoned, island resorts have been a source of heartache for the state's tourism sector.

We can't avoid digitisation, if used critically, it has considerable benefits and can help us address responsible resource use. Often, digitisation discourse centres technology and uses it to explore materials and craft. Lola Ben-Alon takes the reverse approach, using materials and making to be learn more about digitisation. https://buff.ly/3Kdv0t7

KoozArch's series of articles that explore 'new rules for school' touch on some critical issues facing architecture education; from making schools more comparable and transparent, to increasing diversity and changing the contexts we learn and teach. The series core argument is for more student-centred and future-focussed pedagogy, and although it is written for a mainly U.S audience, it gives all Australian schools much food for thought. https://www.koozarch.com/tag/issue-03-new-rules-for-school
