First cave trip of the year was actually a clean-up trip. We picked up trash, cleaned up signage, and more.
Sadly there are a lot of etched signatures from 2020 and onward on a wall; this makes others want to add their mark even though they were told it is illegal. These etchings, we cannot work to remove because the wall has not been checked by an expert in native art; so if we did reclamation work, we could be erasing actual protected history. None has been found here before, but it could exist. Which is worse: increasing amount of destructive etchings over possible native art as we await expert (so far, 2+ years!); or erasing the etchings to halt the damage but possibly damaging something underneath?
I have no answer for this conundrum. Conservation is often billed in a dichotomous manner, right and wrong, but the reality is, there is a lot of nuance. We need to consider perspectives other than our own. After all, none of us leaves no trace.
