I’ve seen “worrying” or “concerning” or even “distressing,” but there’s something about the words “scaring scientists” in this headline (*Washington Post* July 6 noon PDT) that I find massively unnerving.

Why a sudden surge of broken heat records is scaring scientists

Scientists say to brace for more extreme weather and probably a record-warm 2023 amid unprecedented temperatures.

This sums up my #ecological despair #today. The #wildlife and pets and vulnerable folks with no access to #cleanair are in my thoughts. What are the long term consequences of this new #fire regime going to be? 😩 #wildfires #airquality

Okay, I was expecting a higher price for this. It’s still outside my current budget, but I had assumed $5K+ for that combination of tech (especially considering they showed the Mac Pro starting at $7K).

World is on brink of catastrophic warming, U.N. climate change report says

In a new IPCC climate change report, scientists said the world is likely to pass a dangerous temperature threshold within the next 10 years.

Disinformation-based reputation management, including fake pseudo-real websites and search engine optimization used to push down negative stories. Fascinating stuff.

So here’s an interesting distant early warning:

AI “friend” app removes “erotic role play” aspect, causing a major freak-out by users.

But post-ChatGPT bots (such as the one in Bing) are getting better and better, rapidly.

What will we call the potentially severe trauma resulting from the “death” of a companion AI?

'It's Hurting Like Hell': AI Companion Users Are In Crisis, Reporting Sudden Sexual Rejection

Replika, the "AI companion who cares," has undergone some abrupt changes to its erotic roleplay features, leaving many users confused and heartbroken.

As someone with a safety role considering all the things people regularly search Google for, like material safety data sheets, asking an AI what to do in any dangerous situation is:

1) Asking to die from inaccurate/blatantly wrong advice.

2) A liability nightmare. Not sure Section 230 is going to protect the AI's owner.

Will the AI tell you to put out a vinyl chloride fire with water? Will it tell you to wear a HEPA filter respirator? If it did and you follow that advice you are about to die.
