Another excellent vista looking westward from a point just beyond the summit immediately proceeded an almost-vertical plunge down cliffs to US 7. All in all, Barrack Mountain was a grueling, but rewarding section of trail. It was probably better suited to a day hiking trail than a backpacking footpath, but it was, at least, an interesting experience. My 1983 Appalachian Trail Hike in Photos. There are around 750-800 photos here scanned from my 1983 slides. I believe this to be one of the oldest thru-hikes on the Internet to be documented in photos and words to this extent.

The initial climb ascended alongside a stream named Sherman Brook past a variety of cascades and small waterfalls. Next, an old woods road led me away from the brook, climbing along a ridge to the top of East Mountain. After a steep scramble up a rockslide, the trail broke out of the forest onto open rocks and ledges along the ridge crest with great views southward across the valley. The Appalachian Trail followed a gravel road for a stretch through some very scenic meadows in a place called Mill Ridge. I was enjoying the day, and Mill Ridge was a lovely green place with buzzing bees, tall, rustling grasses and nice views of the surrounding mountains. Halfway through your fourth week in the woods, it feels good to walk around in the open for a while. The Valley of Vermont dominated the view, tiny villages dispersed among the green pastures and forests of rural New England. U.S. 7 was a rural 2-lane winding along the valley floor. Across the valley, the Taconic Range was several winding strands of lower mountains stretching to the north and south horizons. Valley and mountains were backlit by the soft golden light of the westering sun. More of My 1983 #AppalachianTrail Hike in Photos at https://www.georgesteffanos.com/places-i-ve-been

From my book Then the Hail Came (A Humorous and Truthful Account of a 1983 #AppalachianTrail Thru-hike). Available on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle eBook versions: https://amazon.com/dp/B09QFG4ZR6 Suddenly a nearby stand of rhododendron began to rattle and shake as if torn by some violent tempest. My worst fears were realized when there erupted from the bushes the black, hairy form of the most dreaded and dangerous predator in the southern Appalachians โ€” the little black puppy.

The initial climb out was deceptively mild, but the endless slope gradually became steeper. Trudging along on legs not far recovered from yesterdayโ€™s exertions, I just had to turn off my mind and keep plodding ahead until the trail leveled off atop Beartown Mountain, a minor summit of Roan. A short side trail led to a decent viewpoint up there, but my legs felt like they had just tackled Everest. #backpacking #hiking More of My 1983 #AppalachianTrail Hike in Photos at https://www.georgesteffanos.com/places-i-ve-been

Republicans were indignant after President Biden called them out for wanting to phase out Social Security and Medicare. But the fact is, that's exactly what many of them want to do.

And now The White House is bringing the video receipts. Watch it here: Https://secondnexus.com/fox-lies-johnson-social-security?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=toot&utm_campaign=2N

A windswept, fog-enveloped bald of Roan Mountain, on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina (November 2015). So windy, it blew my hat off at least once.

Looking ahead to Little Bigelow on the way down from Avery Peak. The sky was still mostly overcast from a night and early morning of heavy rains. Very dry air had moved in after the rain, causing some breaks in the heavy overcast and dazzling sunlight wherever it broke through. The combination caused some spectacular contrasts. My $200 late 70s Fujica did its best to capture them. More of My 1983 #AppalachianTrail Hike in Photos at https://www.georgesteffanos.com/places-i-ve-been

Iโ€™m thinking indictments may come down soon in Fulton County, Georgia. The investigative grand juryโ€™s report is finished there, per news reports.

DA Fani Willis, come through!
