In the Airtight Garage by Moebius there is a vignette that inspired me to a typical urban club scene, where everyone is crowded together drinking, ordering drinks, and trying to talk despite the din of the music, and I imagined myself there completely out of place.

Carlo Grosoli on Instagram: "FUN BEFORE DINNER: New Year Party 2025 - In the Airtight Garage by Moebius there is a vignette that particularly struck me, and it is the one in which Major Grubert decides to go and look for Cornelius in person, accesses the Second Level, and passes through a gathering where "the sacred songs of Chiram" are being listened to. The scene presents a mass of different overlapping figures with both human and alien features, without perspective. There is a number painted on the wall in the background, and only a line from Major Grubert trying to make his way through. It seems particularly interesting to me, because it is flatter and therefore more graphic. As soon as I saw it, it inspired me to a typical urban club scene, where everyone is crowded together drinking, ordering drinks, and trying to talk despite the din of the music, and I imagined myself completely out of place, because I actually don't care anymore about going out to drink badly and have my ears tortured by music that I didn't choose. But what I hoped to be able to draw was that it wasn't so obvious who my alter ego was in the panel, and that the line could be said by any of the characters. I also hoped to come close to Moebius's drawing style, but this is almost impossible, right? - SEMI-FUN FACTS: / Two of the girls do exist and are actually sisters. / There's a boy with extreme skin insertions and a tatoo around his neck. / The girl with headphones could be one I liked decades ago, but she was very arrogant. / Big man’s tattoo is inspired by graphic designer Art Chantry’s one. / I met more than one punk with that spikey hair. / There's a punkish girl in search for love who talks a lot. / There's a mix between Rick Rubin and a punk from the Ken Shiro series. / That cap is branded Appennini Tortellini @appenninitortellini - MUSIC: This song by Rita Coolidge gives the perfect 80s pathetic and sad vibe like a pointless night in a club. - Fun Before Dinner is broadcast by Carlo Grosoli whenever he can, but mostly before eating and drinking. - #illustration #comix #comics #comicart #digitalart #drawing #moebius #jeangiraud #funbeforedinner"

@jhilden I guess it originates from an agreement on the semiotics of a warning and an arrest for anyone who crosses a line (the big flat hand into our face) evidently shared by international public administrations. I found one in the garbage. I recovered it and washed it and posted it on my bedroom door in the family's second home, where we spend part of the summer holidays. My niece is always trying to break in and steal my Faber Castell Polychromos.

In A *NEW* GRAPHIC DESIGN PROGRAM, the authorDavid Reinfurt talks about Susan Kare and her famous animated GIFs for the Apple Mac user interface of 1984. On p.133 he gives us an assignment: design an animated graphic that means “wait”. I tried with a cartoon character who can't stay awake anymore. Pixel animation is so constrained that it's super fun.

Design is first and foremost… not architecture.

Spoiler: tools, graphics and clothes come first.

The World As Design
Because I wrote about my delight while reading Zeldman's handbook and I asked for other reading advices, first I have to say that this is my book collection of @abookapart, for now. And of course I'm a eager reader of A List Apart. But I'm listening to any advice.
Like many others, I go backwards. I know some advanced things, but I experience the insecurity of those who have not started on a more linear path in time. So I wanted to read Jeffrey Zeldman's well-known handbook (with Ethan Marcotte @beep ) "design with web standards" and I am finding it delightful and reassuring. I will always have learning and chasing to do, but these kinds of resources are a boon to me. And I would like more of them. If Zeldman and Marcotte has any other reading advice...
On LinkedIn, I asked Mr. Spiekermann if he thinks it's still worth it to pretend my students in their 20s learn how to "do your math" in order to design a grid based on body size and line height. It seems he's on my side. My fear is that I tend to see students always less inclined to consider this an interesting learning path. The "engineering" part of layout design and typesetting looks boring and unsexy. But how do they think they should typeset? Maybe "automatically"?

Reading @Wilto @abookapart "Javascript For Web Designers" in the quietness of Italian Northern Appennines. Actually here, at villacavola.it. I'm sure I'll be able to fix the website JS code soon.

I tried to make a navbar menu with flexbox and min() function for gaps, without using justify-content.

The menu must take the full 90vw on mobile, and keep itself right-aligned with a 2.5em gap from tablet to desktop, avoiding queries, hamburger/kebab hidden menus.

Feel free to demolish it. I'm learning.
