Every year it is traditional to watch Dronning Margrethe II’s new year’s speech. This year’s speech was historisk - the Queen announced she will abdicate the throne in favour of Crown Prince Frederick on 14 January 2024. Let’s talk about Danish birthday cakes. A traditional cake is the ‘kagemand’ (cake man) or ‘kagekone’ (cake wife) - - these are available with added gummies and marsipan or without, and can be purchased in multiple bases like coffee cake, cinnamon, or chocolate.
Another fun tradition: when Danes bring in the kagemand everyone sings a birthday song and then you cut the cake. Tradition is to cut the kagemand’s throat first, and all present scream.
