Leaving Prague where I have had a first look at the new Blindshell Classic 3 smartphone - a keypad-driven device for the blind with some smartphone capabilities. Haven't had the 2 model in my hands for a while but the screen seems to be bigger, pushing the keypad keys closer towards each other. Other than that, the material of the keys feels the same. The device is running Android 10, let's see how long the compatibility for the apps that are most likely to be used on this will hold. I focused mostly on the downloading external apps aspect. The Aurora Store is easy to navigate. I quickly found the Search option and downloaded Teamtalk (obviously putting the built-in mikes through their paces was at the top of my priorities list). The download took surprisingly long to finish. According to a speed test, the wifi on site had decent download/upload speeds so unless they used their own wifi, Aurora has some noticeable lag with their servers. The touch screen does not support any gestures. It is there only to explore it with one finger and confirm the selection with a double tap (think Android 4.0 Icecream Sandwich). You use the arrow keys to traverse the apps element by element. There are shortcuts such as long pressing of either of the arrow keys to jump to the first or last element on screen. The number keys also seem to be doing some kind of quicker navigation but I haven't had the time to figure this out in-depth. Adding a TT server worked as expected. Unfortunately, the screen reader seemed to be jumping over static text fields so I wasn't able to read things like mic gain meter or the ping, RX and TX values. The microphones are super loud and need a limiter, like, right now. It is necessary to speak from a greater distance not to blow the ears of your audience with sound. This doesn't seem to be the case with the internal voice recorder. It also seems to be applying some kind of noise reduction so recording ambience is not possible. It also, miraculously, as able to output stereo on Teamtalk. I'll try to fetch the recording later and post a bit of it here. It also wouldn't switch to the external microphone of my headset. There's also a Messenger service called Tandem supplied with it. The idea is, you register there, share a link with the person you would like to contact and they install the Tandem app on their iOS or Android device. There are text and voice messages and audio/video calls, as well as a feature to remotely control the Blindshell. It doesn't seem like the representative had tested compatibility of the latter with VoiceOver and Talkback so we don't know if that will work but there should be buttons to mimic the BS keyboard in the call view. I have registered in the app, have nobody to talk to yet but have spotted an unlabelled button already. (1/2)
