Google Search Console tip for #SEO professionals: don't forget about the impact of Twitter carousels.

If a URL is shared on Twitter and gets placed within a carousel on Google, the impressions (and even clicks) can show in your data.

I created an experiment to show how this works on my blog, which you can take a look at here: https://brodieclark.com/twitter-carousels-google-search/

Interesting new sitelink on Google when searching for "mastodon"

The new 'shopping tab listings' tab looks to have rolled out to all of my Google Search Console properties now.

Currently, the tab just directs users over to Merchant Center where you can see some basic info for clicks/impressions for all "free product listings". I wonder if we can expect more from this report in GSC.

Not having any data at all in the GSC dashboard and linking over to Merchant Center (which includes data for free product listings in general, also including "Popular Products" which can get far more visibility) seems incomplete. Hmmm

#SEO News: Google has now moved the 'Things to know' SERP feature to the right-hand column.
Was previously integrated with 10-blue-links, now it's on the right on desktop. If you rank in this feature, this change could mess with your GSC data.

Pages that are excluded from the index within Google Search Console...

This is an old screenshot of mine, but this site had 385M. Can anyone beat that?

I'm pleased to announce that my Mastodon profile is now indexed on Google. #SEO

Update: Google has changed the wording in their official documentation on structured data. There is no impact on rankings, just rich results (as we previously thought).

Well, this is news to me. Apparently pages or sites that violate Google's Structured Data guidelines could receive lower rankings in Search. I was previously under the impression that rich results just wouldn't appear... Great catch by

As searcher intent changes, Google's search results follow.

Always interesting to see how quickly SERP features and ranking pages can change when users expect different results.

Last month, the search term "mastodon" had a prominent Knowledge Panel for the band, along with the top organic listing. The second organic listing had a Wikipedia article for the animal.

Today, Google displays a Knowledge Panel for the software, along with the full sitelink treatment (for branded queries) for the most popular server, including popular pages within that sub-domain.

#SEO professionals: pay attention to the hints that Google is giving you about search results. Don't waste time trying to rank for queries where the intent isn't right.
