@ben @davew yeah, a year ago and six months ago and even 3 months ago, my answers would’ve been different. The models we’ve had since December and the stuff this month do some really astounding and smart stuff. Plus I use git worktrees now to make sure my shit doesn’t get rocked.

One of my better and more useful contraptions is this harbor freight solar-charged security light that i attached to my garage door and hacked a tilt switch into.

The tilt switch means the light only turns on when my garage door is open and it's dark outside. That's really helpful when I'm cleaning up in the driveway at night. When the garage door is closed, the light turns itself off.

It's been there for a few years now and it's still working great.

This is how #Holos currently handles #E2EE DMs over #ActivityPub. Holos is a project we develop alongside #Fedilab.

@davew DAVE WINER! What a joy to meet you here on Mastodon. Sir, you are one of my heroes. I'm the guy behind Insomnia Radio (one of the first 30 podcasts in the world) and I've been a podcasting fanatic ever since. Thanks for helping bring RSS and podcasts to the world.
The fish in my doctor’s office are once again fascinated by my presence.

When I run a program written by someone I know - written by a younger version, more naive, less wise, more sleep deprived, usually - I can recognize their care in the affordances they built in.

That useful log message, graceful error detection and recovery, perfectly crystallized concept in the manual: that's my friend there taking care of me, and the person they imagined in my place. It's warm, personal.

When the arcs of our lives are lit by good luck, I can thank them.

@davew we just released our Fediverse/ActivityPub to RSS bridge. If you are in WordPress.com and follow someone on the #fediverse we add their RSS feed to the WordPress.com Reader.

I'm currently working on my next "What the Internet Was Like in..." post for Cybercultural, this time for the year 2000. Wondering if anyone has specific memories about Flash websites that year? Or blogging, or social news sites like MetaFilter and Kuro5hin. Do let me know what comes to mind for you re the web in 2000...
