I write about local government, housing and public services across metro Atlanta for the AJC. I'd rather be playing Stellaris tbh.
It isn't just one law professor. It appears ChatGPT routinely fills in the gaps with falsehoods when prompted to talk about specific individuals about whom it may have limited credible data. An Australian mayor is threatening to sue OpenAI with defamation after ChatGPT told a constituent he'd been imprisoned for bribery, and the rumor spread. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/04/openai-may-be-sued-after-chatgpt-falsely-says-aussie-mayor-is-an-ex-con/

Asked for examples of sexual harassment at law schools, ChatGPT named a GW law prof accused of touching a student on a class trip to Alaska, citing a 2018 Washington Post story.

The law prof is real. The rest was made up.

ChatGPT invented a sexual harassment scandal and named a real law prof as the accused

ChatGPT accused a law professor of harassment. But the evidence doesn’t exist.

Most folks I know who are worried about AI aren’t worried about these programs becoming self aware and oppressing us. That’s not a thing. We’re worried about all the ways these systems will ramp up existing inequalities and further obliterate our shared reality as human beings. That’s already happening.

"AI will eventually free people up to 'work when they want to,' ChatGPT investor predicts"

Uh huh, sure, the same thing was said about the industrial revolution and about mass production and about personal computers but then the wealthy absorbed all of productivity benefits and then kept demanding a bigger and bigger slice of the pie anyway.

ChatGPT investor predicts AI will 'free humanity' from work

AI could "free humanity from the need to work," said Vinod Khosla, an early OpenAI investor, but getting to such a "utopia" will be messy.

The Census Bureau released new county-level population updates.

Red counties are growing, despite having more deaths than births, thanks to new arrivals from blue counties. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/03/30/red-america-is-growing-because-blue-america-is-shrinking/?itid=ap_philipbump

Red America is growing because blue America is shrinking

International immigrants are moving to blue counties while blue counties lose residents to red ones.

THE MOMENT:
On March 23, 2023, for the first time in 155 years, the @ajc hired a Black man - @AJCLeroyChapman - to become Editor-in-Chief. Blessed to have witnessed this moment in history. I've never been prouder to be associated with this fine organization.

Wow. WaPo digs into why the South has the lowest credit scores in the country (adding to individual consumers' borrowing costs, freezing then out of credit at all). The answer: Medical debt. Because the South didn't expand Medicaid.

Why the South has such low credit scores

Why does the American South have worse credit scores than the rest of the country? Hint: It's not just race or income.

Having fun on Twitter unpicking a curious thing that happened to me this morning. Someone reached me on Signal thinking I was ChatGPT. Turned out it had given them my number.

I don't think I even fixed the initial reason I wanted to migrate, which was to get off a European server 😂

Decided what I really wanted was just a server with more people on it to make it easier to find stuff. The search function on the old server was beyond useless.
