In @TransitionShow Ep. 226, Mike O'Boyle of Energy Innovation questions forecasts of surging demand for electricity from data centers & AI, and suggests that rushing to build new gas-fired power plants may not be the best way to meet it. https://xenetwork.org/ets/episodes/episode-226-load-growth-shenanigans/
[Episode #226] – Load Growth Shenanigans | The Energy Transition Show

Should we believe projections of surging electricity demand from data centers, crypto miners and AI? And are new gas plants the best way to meet new demand?

The climate freak-out du jour is, typically, horribly misrepresenting a very technical paper about the AMOC. E.g., if you read this https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jul/25/gulf-stream-could-collapse-as-early-as-2025-study-suggests?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other you'll get a clear sense that the climate will soon pass a "tipping point" and "The Gulf Stream system could collapse as soon as 2025" or worse - as one person said, "The North Atlantic Conveyor is going to fail over the next decade."

That is not exactly what the paper says.

Great blog post today by Max Auffhammer about the value of consumers actually knowing how much they are consuming when it comes to energy. I suspect this would be the greatest revolution in energy efficiency ever. Is there really not an RCT that has tested this? I know some work in developing world is suggestive. https://energyathaas.wordpress.com/2023/05/30/the-uninformed-and-out-of-control-energy-consumer/

@brendanp Thanks for boosting that - Nice work by Jeff, I agree.

I just wish there were some way for communities, not just utilities, to access funds as easily to help them build out their own microgrids, VPPs, etc. But many small communities aren't big enough to even have the capacity to write a successful grant or loan application, let alone navigate the federal programs bureaucracy to even find the opportunities. I have flagged this to @JigarShah but haven't found a viable solution yet...

In Ep. 198, @[email protected] discusses his book "The Coal Trap: How West Virginia Was Left Behind in the Clean Energy Revolution." https://xenetwork.org/ets/episodes/episode-198-the-coal-trap/

If you've ever wondered why Coal Country continued to cling to coal while everyone else got with the #energytransition, this episode is for you! It also offers very helpful insights about the motivations of Sen. Manchin and many others. Must-listen stuff!

Q: Are any financial players (private sector, or folks in agencies with loan authority like DOE, USDA) thinking about instruments to turn 10 years of direct pay PTC into up-front capital for munis and co-ops, without high interest rates, big discounts to the PTC, high coverage ratios, etc? Once operating, it's just production risk.
