Crow PSA: I often see people wondering what type of food to gift crows to win them over. While food is the quickest path to friendship, water is extremely important too -- especially during the summer and critically so during heat waves. Put out water in a container that's fairly easy to clean because crows love to soak their food to soften it. It could get dirty pretty quick. Just this morning my best crow bud came by with a prize pizza crust he wanted to soak (in complete disregard of our no-outside-food policy!).

Good morning!

Woke up at 4:30 this morning to what sounded like an all-out crow war. They have nests in the trees in front of and behind my house so this is becoming a regular occurrence. I fell back asleep but it went on for 6ish hours.

The culprit? Some jerk racoon who ended up getting chased down the block.

Just a few weeks until the crows abandon their nests for their communal party headquarters in Burnaby. Looking forward to the truce between the city's glorious garbage monsters.

One of my favourite things about #Calckey has been the drive feature. Having dedicated storage for uploads is cool in itself but I've been mostly using it to save photos with alt-text from my phone to make longer form posts in a browser later and it's so damn convenient.

Calckey has so many little improvements coming from Mastodon. Antennas aren't as simple as hashtag following but are so much more powerful. It's like having separate algorithmic feeds that can be as broad or narrow as you want. I have two really simple ones I use for agroecology posts and for following the war in Ukraine but you can set them up to follow specific instances or people with exclude terms as well. I always felt a bit handcuffed on Mastodon -- like there was info out there that I just couldn't or didn't know how to find -- and it's refreshing having advanced search and discovery tools.

Don't. You. Dare.

I used to do a sort of similar thing in the #pixelfed app too -- tapping the very non-tappable icons in the instructions and being confused when it didn't work.

This as-yet-unnamed crow is one of the friendly ones. They went to the food spot and didn't find anything there. They did that slow rattle call and I went outside. I got a small amount of cat food and walked out toward the crow. Instead of flying away, they jumped into the tree and watched from about 2 feet away as I put some down.

When took a step back they jumped over but, instead of eating the cat food, they tried to pick up the little bits of cheezie dust on the railing instead. So I went and grabbed the cheezie bag. The crow jumped back onto the nearby tree branch as I approached and watched as I put a few cheezies down. Then they hopped back over to grab them.

Crow update

I had to change up how I'm feeding because of a problem crow. I had a small amount of cat food in a thick ceramic bowl that was working well. One crow, who might not be the sharpest beak in the roost, decided that the obvious way to get this food was get its beak under the bowl. I saw this happening when I was out there but the crow figured it out after moving the bowl a cm or two. I moved the bowl back once they'd left.

Cut to a few hours later. There's a loud crash and I go out to find that crow flapping around in a panic at getting none of the food instead of all of it. I tried a a plastic container that I taped down. The tape prevented the container from getting tossed but not the food. So... it's loose cat food until there's a better container set up.
