I live in southern California, I write code, watch movies, make art, eclectic reading habits, unexpected grammatical choices. Interested in the scaling issues with Mastodon, not really convinced that this project is going to work.

@w7voa Has the Biden admin tried NOT violating the 1st Amendment?
@knordstrom @gpollara @mastodonmigration Some percentage are people harvesting accounts for future use. This happens when people start talking about alternatives to the big sites like Twitter. Alternate sites feel like they have become suddenly become popular. They don’t have the tools to monitor organized activity.
@rbreich Posting on both Twitter and Mastodon, I see. Very wise strategy.
@mwadmin Do you have a time machine? Because you need to go back several months to clean up this mess. And it was so exciting to think that droves of real people were suddenly adopting this platform.
@mastodonusercount And how many are being harvested by bot farms? 10%? 90%? This is really not a good sign.

@mastodonmigration @tchambers This part is strange:

“I’m not interested in any protocol besides ActivityPub,” he says. “Anyone working on brand new protocols in 2023 should stop immediately. They are going to do more harm than good.”

Especially since the ActivityPub group has been inactive for years.

@atomicpoet “This spike” started 5 months ago. Whatever happened on March 14 is mere noise. Your choice of y-axis is deceptive in the graph.
@atomicpoet Account harvesting happens anytime people start to migrate to alternate sites, as when people declared they were leaving Twitter. The alternate sites feel like they have become popular, and they don’t have the tools to spot the fake activity. Been happening for the past 15 years, became more blatant 7-8 years ago.
@atomicpoet Looks like account harvesting has kicked into high gear. 90% of those accounts are for future bot activity. Small servers should lock their doors.
