A couple of months ago, @james called @mark a silly person (in so many words, and [mostly?] in jest) for starting a new podcast hosting platform in 2023.
In the true Spirit of the Staircase, here's his response: https://bramble.fm/blog/why-now/
Confirmed.
Just updated from ffmpeg 4 to 6 and the silence remover is now behaving as expected.
All I'd planned to do – about 4 hours ago – was update the product demo video with a new feature released over the weekend. But building and managing your own SaaS is basically like being the dad from Malcom in the Middle trying to change a lightbulb.
It's 11 at night and I'm compiling ffmpeg via source because there's a subtle difference in the silence removal tool somewhere between v4 – which is used in production – and v6 – which is on my Mac.
It’s taken me about 90 minutes just to come to that realisation.
At least I HOPE that's the realisation. Otherwise, something absolutely wild is happening in Docker.
Our first instance of dynamic audio insertion is live in a real, working podcast.
I was able to go through my back catalogue of episodes and assign the ad insertion points in minutes, using tags to identify the audio that should be inserted where.
Oh, and you can upload segments of your episode and Bramble will build it, along with your theme music, automatically.
IT'S ALL HAPPENING!
v1 of our episode title, show notes, and blog post writer is done. Audio goes in: transcripts and summative text comes out. A half-hour episode takes maybe 5 minutes.
The more targeted and helpful your episode, the better the show notes will be, because we're using some tried-and-tested writing formulas that work best when your content solves problems.
A pretty productive start to the day!
Bramble Sites — our super-customisable, modular podcast website builder — is now hosting 2 podcast websites: https://lifeinstride.co.uk/ and https://inside.bramble.fm/
The former was built this morning. It took about an hour, and that’s without a public-facing user interface. 🙂
The latter uses the default theme.
Still lots more to do, but making massive progress towards our September beta launch.
And we have an updated landing page too! https://bramble.fm/

I've been fighting with the YouTube API for 2 days now. I got SO close but then Google smacked my hand away for reasons unknown. Determined to make it happen, but there may be other fruit to pick.
You can hear about that, building an embed player, and my thoughts on client- vs server-side energy usage in the latest entry in the Bramble audio diary!

The code to convert audio to video with animated waveform took about 10 minutes to get a good, rough draft together.
I had to stop after 2hrs and 3 different approaches ro get the YouTube API to play nicely, because it’s past this hedgehog’s bedtime.
My recollection from before was their overly fussy API was what made this integration unsuccessful. But I’ll crack it.
