@avavsystems I used to have a Voice of Music reel-to-reel (model 720 or 722) with “Add+A+Track” which was the inverse of Sel-Sync: it would play back the overdubbed track from the record head, i.e. the tracks are not in sync on the tape. Recently learned about “Staggered Stereo” which it could also play (and record?). Machine vanished at some point but online descriptions allowed me to figure out the offset (.16666... ms--1.25” at 7.5ips) and restore a master recorded that way back in 1982.

@buffyleigh Years later I met him and said you probably don’t remember, but we met once before and described the circumstances. He said “yeah I don’t remember, but in fairness I was probably very high”. :-)

@buffyleigh This a degenerate form of 80s REM fandom where we just thought about Michael Stipe in general for about half our waking hours. Once saw him at a Fleshtones show in shades and heavy jacket and gardening gloves (in DC in the summer!) and we’re going “is it? It’s him…I think…” Finally my friend Barrett just asked him “are you MS?” and when he said yes replied “I knew it was you from the gloves” which he promptly took off.
