i believe these are the 2 oldest surviving online reviews of #gratefuldead shows, scene reports from the warfield theater, september 1980, by stanford AI researchers paul martin & dave wilkins, pictured here on spring tour '74, a year after the launch of the dead.dis email list. preserved on this SAIL backup: https://www.saildart.org/ #deadfreaksunite

posted in the sweet spot between the rear surround speakers at public records & watched with my ears (& grooved with the disco ball) for sparkling 12-string by eli winter (with david grubbs on harmonium for the closer) & elemental set by fennesz, loops & oceanic drones & distant gamelan.
after SUGAR MAGNOLIA, garcia shifts into GOIN’ DOWN THE ROAD FEELING BAD, in unusual spot as a show-closer with no additional weirness afterwards. BID YOU GOODNIGHT instrumental ending is a lovely chill way to close the night. #deadfreaksunite #gd111972 [3/3]
11/19/72 houston: TRUCKIN’ conspicuously absent on both nights in the city too close to new orleans. lesh/godchaux/weir lock into gorgeous patterns under garcia’s BIRD SONG flight. really sweet TOMORROW IS FOREVER. 39-minute DARK STAR > MISSISSIPPI HALF-STEP. sleepy pre-verse jazz, almost gentle bass. after, lesh solo builds to deconstructive PHILO STOMP, moving into brightness. weir briefly plays proto-WEATHER REPORT SUITE PRELUDE, but no one else quite registers. nice landing, too. 50 years ago tonight, the #gratefuldead in houston, finishing a weekend. another night originally scheduled with the allman bros. late fall ’72, show #7. soundboard: https://archive.org/details/gd1972-11-19.122784.sbd.miller-gans.flac24 [1/3]

another green jersey! #thefeelies as the willies as themselves at white eagle hall in jersey city. vibed originals & covers they haven't played since the mid-'80s. "the obedient atom"! "here come the warm jets"! also, apparently they can jam? total bliss, minus 20 minute fire alarm evacuation. and then an old fashioned feelies stomp, even more ecstatic & full-feeling after an atmospheric willies set, complete with the return of "crazy rhythms" era bassist keith denunzio for "forces at work."
memories of the dead in houston, tonight in 1972. [3/3]
11/18/72 houston: fantastic garcia vocals on 16-minute HE’S GONE, counterbalanced by off-night for donna jean. extended vocal outro & jam, mellow in the best way. lazily unfolding conversation, lots of bass. wall-to-wall endlessly-renewing full-tilt 26-minute PLAYING IN THE BAND. chattering bass, dizzying garcia ellipses, general shred-melt mayhem, clomping piano densities, all threaded along kreutzmann’s dancing snare, constantly resetting the swing. #deadfreaksunite #gd111872 [2/3]
50 years ago tonight, the #gratefuldead in houston, intended to be a co-bill with the allman bros., who cancelled due to berry oakley’s death. the (known) debut of the nudie suits. only set 2, released in 2014. late fall ’72, show #6. https://archive.org/details/gd72-11-18.set2-sbd.cotsman.9002.sbeok.shnf [1/3]
well that's nifty. if you post screencaps of text, you can have mastodon automatically detect the text & put it into the caption. (this is a very meta screencap.)
