A common argument I come across when talking about ethics in AI is that it's just a tool, and like any tool it can be used for good or for evil. One familiar declaration is this one: "It's really no different from a hammer". I was compelled to make a poster to address these claims. Steal it, share it, print it and use it where you see fit.

If a hammer was like AI…

Computations will ā€œestimateā€ your aim, tend to miss the nail and push for a different design. Often unnoticeably.

EDIT: In an obituary I wrote for Jean Bourgain in https://terrytao.wordpress.com/2018/12/29/jean-bourgain/ , I commented on one of his papers: "It’s hard to describe (especially in lay terms) the experience of reading through (and finally absorbing) the sections of this paper one by one; the best analogy I can come up with would be watching an expert video game player nimbly navigate his or her way through increasingly difficult levels of some video game, with the end of each level (or section) culminating in a fight with a huge ā€œbossā€ that was eventually dispatched using an array of special weapons that the player happened to have at hand." I now have an appropriate visual aid to illustrate this experience.

#Introduction

Hi, I’m Aleks

I’m faculty at the CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security where I lead the group on trustworthy #AI.

I’m broadly interested in #Trustworthy #MachineLearning, that is models and algorithms that are not only accurate or efficient but also robust, privacy-preserving, fair, uncertainty-aware, and interpretable. I have a special focus on graph-based models such as graph neural networks.

I'm happy to be here. Looking forward to great discussions šŸŽ‰
