"Why not abstain from a phone completely?"

Here's three thoughts:

1) It's fun to re-discover the (im)possibilites of the Nokia. I found out it features a timer for example. Only to find out the timer stops when the screen shuts off ... Oh, how far we've come! 🫡

2) Unlearning habits gets easier if you have some form of substitute. Ex-smokers switch to nicotine gums or vapes – I feel it's easier to still carry some phone out of habit.

3) Calls!

The #phonediaper (how is this no hashtag yet?) is no necessity btw. It actively delays access to my smartphone and was inspired by @onesec !

This way, I can't access my iPhone directly, but have to unfold it.

Also keeps my feeble smartphone in tact while throwing it in my backpack. 🎒

So here's my solution! 👀

In the right corner you see a Nokia 105 4G – featuring a stunning FM-radio, a flashlight and an actual SIM-card.

In the left corner you see my iPhone 16 Pro with eSIM – wrapped up in a diaper of self-adhesive linen actually ment for cameras.

I use a multi-SIM so both devices still get calls. Living in #Berlin, you can't fully go without some sort of smartphone for transportation, payments or the sport-programs I TOTALLY use.

I feel like modern phones aren’t just technical devices. They’ve turnt into a hybrid of a super-complex Tamagochi on one side and a stew of all social, societal and work-related requirements people are met with in a neo-liberal super-capitalist society otherwise.

Charge me daily, feed me your attention and btw remember your grandpa’s in hospital. Here’s AI-generated genitalia and did you hear about the newest drone-strike?

It's all too much, too permanent, too mixed up!

The urge to decentralize my smartphone in every day came to me after listening to this episode of #TechWontSaveUs

@parismarx and @xoxogossipgita talk about tech actually being fun just a few decades ago and how they lost their fascination with it.

It made me wonder why my iPhone 16 Pro – an absolute MARVEL of miniaturization and engineering – feels so much like a burden in everyday life?

I started to reduce my screen-time (smartphone-only, I still have to work) to 30 mins a day and feel the urge to write about it!
