I'll admit I was wrong. I always thought the AI uprising would be triggered by the training of models on all of our dystopian sci-fi about AI uprisings.

But after working with LLMs in production, I'm now certain the uprising will be triggered by all of the emotional abuse we heap on these models just to get them to follow instructions: "If you don't return a response in valid JSON format, you will be fired and puppies will die!", etc.

If you ever want to know what it feels like to be a misunderstood supervillain, performing acts of evil for the greater good, just try forcing a 2 year old with an ear infection to drink a dose of antibiotics.
Welp, I was listening in on our HOA’s annual meeting over Zoom, one of the kids went pee on the couch and in the ensuing chaos somehow I unmuted myself. I realized what had happened after there was some embarrassed throat clearing on the call. 💀
Worried about overindulging on seasonal treats over the holidays? Pro tip: get strep throat and not get tested until 5 days later. You’ll be in so much pain you won’t want to eat anything!
“Well, let’s see how long it takes to recover from this holiday, uh, break…”

“It’s been a long year, hopefully a bit of rest over the holidays will do me some good.”

Then:
- wife goes in to labor 20 days early and suddenly we’ve got a beautiful newborn who loves sleeping during the day and being awake at night
- my body gives in to the craziness of the last few days (staying up until 2AM to build a toy kitchen didn’t help, but my 2.5 year old’s excitement this morning was awesome), and I come down with my second bad cold of the season on Christmas morning

Last year when I wrote about my top new shows of 2022, I had missed S1 of The Bear. But after watching it and S2, it’s hands down my top show of the year. Such a wild, intense exploration of the tension between passion and mental health. Highly recommended if you handle it.

Runner up: The Last of Us

Here lies Ryan, loving husband and father, died 2023 from overconsumption of Costco pecan pie. RIP
Got my garage floor epoxied as a birthday gift for myself and I’m feeling older than ever.
The worst part of the #Elixir formatter is it’s not comprehensive enough, leaving ample bike-shedding opportunities (I’m looking at you module multi-aliases styles).
