A global biodiversity observing system to unite monitoring and guide action - Nature Ecology & Evolution

The rate and extent of global biodiversity change is surpassing our ability to measure, monitor and forecast trends. We propose an interconnected worldwide system of observation networks — a global biodiversity observing system (GBiOS) — to coordinate monitoring worldwide and inform action to reach international biodiversity targets.

I am very happy to have been selected to join the UN CBD Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on indicators for the Global Biodiversity Framework.

I will try to support countries with the task of measuring and guiding progress to the goals and targets with @geobon knowledge

Mass production of unvouchered records fails to represent global biodiversity patterns - Nature Ecology & Evolution

An interrogation of almost 2 billion occurrence records for terrestrial plants and animals derived from either primary voucher specimens or direct observations, including citizen-science data, reveals differences in their coverage of global biodiversity patterns.

No sign of decrease in global #CO2 emissions

Global #carbon #emissions in 2022 remain at record levels – with no sign of the decrease that is urgently needed to limit warming to 1.5°C, according to the #GlobalCarbonProject science team.
If current emissions levels persist, there is now a 50% chance that #GlobalWarming of 1.5°C will be exceeded in 9 years.

A density functional theory for ecology across scales

"Here we use density functional theory, a computational method for many-body problems in physics, to develop a computational framework for ecosystem modelling." #biodiversity
A density functional theory for ecology across scales - Nature Communications

Modelling diverse ecological phenomena across scales with a single mathematical framework is challenging. Here, the authors draw on density functional theory to develop a framework that bridges between mechanistic theories at fine scales and statistical models at large scales.

The stability and collapse of marine ecosystems during the Permian-Triassic mass extinction

Remarkable paleo reconstruction from fossil record of how loss of ecosystem stability occurred thousands of years after the loss of species

The stability and collapse of marine ecosystems during the Permian-Triassic mass extinction

Modeling marine community food webs across the Permian-Triassic boundary, Huang et al. reveal that the two phases of the largest mass extinction of Earth life in 252 mya behaved differently, with biodiversity declining ∼61 ka before ecosystem collapse, and this shows that biodiversity crash and ecosystem resilience collapse were decoupled.
