The US library system, once the best in the world, faces death by a thousand cuts

In addition to political censorship and budget cuts, libraries are being undermined by rapacious digital licensing agreements

When I visited China in 2015, every motorbike and scooter in Beijing was already electric.
If people are surprised that China is now dominating the market for decent, low cost electric cars, they haven't been paying attention.
It's the American car manufacturers who, once again, have had to be dragged kicking and screaming into innovation and doing the right thing.

At a #CambMA public meeting tonight, the city is showing how biking has grown in the city as the city has built out an improved network of bike lanes

The Georgia legislature trying to remove Fani Willis as she goes to prosecute Donald Trump isn't normal legislative behavior - it's obstructive. The whole point is to interfere with DA Willis's efforts to execute justice per her oath of office.

Meanwhile every single member of the Republican Georgia legislature who signed on to this bullshit is VIOLATING their oath of office.

How about we start calling this bullshit what it is.

@BostonGlobe the entire article shows how entitled and oblivious drivers of multi ton vehicles have been to their own behavior and what the expectations should be. Glad that the perspective of road advocates pointing out that hitting a speed bump without seeing it shows the constant daily danger cities have previously exposed their residents to; and that the speed bumps are an appropriate measure.

Headline contest! @BostonGlobe did a fair job on this article, but here’s how I would caption it: “After decades of terrorizing the streets, drivers surprised to find municipality imposing actual consequences for dangerous speeding”

What’s your headline? https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/08/22/metro/somerville-speed-humps/

A bumpy start — and lessons learned — as Somerville lines busy roads with ‘speed humps’

Drivers in one area were taken by surprise when they encountered a series of unmarked bumps in the street. The city fixed the problem — and took note of the mistake.

Some more advice on public comment in general:
- State your position clearly at the start.
- Write a draft, or at least the main bullet points, in advance.
- Practice at least once with a timer, they will cut you off as soon as you reach the time limit. You don't have to use the entire time.
- Know your audience. The CPUC is not going to suddenly adopt a radical new position on cars after a one minute speech, but might care about safety.
- Similarly, stay focused on the matter being voted on.
- Personal experiences or perspectives can be valuable.
