Over the past year, FromThePage--like many cultural heritage websites--has faced increasing pressure from scrapers harvesting data to train AI systems. These attacks reached a crescendo on Monday morning, when a Chinese bot-swarm overwhelmed our countermeasures. We are currently rearchitecting our systems to include a commercial service to fight this problem, and apologize for outages during this period.
I feel like we're living through the (English) Reformation, but instead of the dissolution of the monasteries (and their libraries) and the destruction of art, we're watching researchers be fired and data from whole fields of science being deleted from cloud servers.

In the nearly 4 years since we shared it, how have you used the Collective Wisdom Handbook?

Have you ever wondered where an author lifted a passage from when they didn't cite a source? @lucianli123.bsky.social was able to use LLM embeddings to trace sources Charles Darwin used in Origin of Species, as well as later authors quoting (or paraphrasing) Darwin!

See his work at today's webinar:

I spent the last 5 hours on eldercare and family time, but managed to get a release out the door tonight: FromThePage 24.12-pre, a pre-release version of the codebase with an upgrade to Ruby 3 and Rails 7.

That ends #DayOfDH2024 for me.

Testing a bug fix between meetings. This might be a good time to show off the slider feature we built into FromThePage's transcription screen. (It's nicer on a big monitor, but even on my laptop, adjusting the image view vs. transcription editor makes a difference.) #DayOfDH2024
This #DayOfDH2024 is on Monday, when we have our weekly planning meeting for FromThePage. We gather stats for our scorecard, so I've filled in the product side. (Interestingly, the number of pages transcribed last week fell by a third -- was it the US holiday or did a big project finish?)
Finished my overview of open pull requests for the team. Sadly, most of the open issues are blocked by me, and I'll be in meetings most of the

Starting my #DayOfDH2024 with a coffee and looking over the 21 open pull requests on the FromThePage repository to see what must be tested today before we cut a release.
Found it!
