I really don't know how to best identify myself in a bio. I feel like I change everyday. Professionally, I am a web developer, but I don't talk about it much. I love art of all kinds - poetry, writing, painting, drawing, videogames, and movies. I sometimes write or draw, but I'm far from talented in those efforts. There is a lot of stuff I care about - climate, inclusion, accessibility, and kindness. Sometimes I feel unable to help the world, but I try my best.

I am becoming more interested in #web #sustainability and #GreenSoftware in general. I've been listening to the Environment Variables podcast a lot lately. Does anyone have any other great sources of inspiration?
Attention authors: When I see "AI art" accompanying your article, I assume your writing will be equally thoughtless and close it immediately. I would 100% respect weird stick figures and shaky diagrams in their place. In fact, I would *love* those.

ease of use devours the soul!

i want software i use to feel like my mom’s iron pan. the pan requires skill, care, and understanding. it says “if you learn to use me, i’ll serve you forever. but you have to care.”

the opposite is something like an air fryer. it’s immediately easy to use, but it can never feel as real and human as an iron pan.

i want my tools to require _effort_ from me. i want to have to invest in them a little. otherwise they feel like ghosts.

With my 3rd graders we've just had a nice, distracting art lesson. I think I've already told you about my work with refugees, and that they are having hard times right now. Since I was lucky to take some autumnal reflection photographs at a nearby lake last week, I took one picture today, rotated it like this and put it on the smart board. The kids saw the whole world in it and made their own watercolour art work later on. What do you see?

(This is not really my poem, it comes Hayao Miyazaki via Paul Valéry. But what it meant to Mr. Valéry is likely different than what it meant to Miyazaki-sama which is likely very different than what it means to me. So, enjoy if it means something to you, then I encourage you to seek out "Le Cimetière Marin" by Valéry or "風立ちぬ" by Miyazaki)
