Hello Americans on Mastodon, I know we don't feel like there's much to celebrate this July 4th. It's been a rough several years.

So I want to talk about how we're making history right now.

“It seems highly unlikely that the parents being frozen out of #Christmas dinners are those who ‘just happen’ to vote Republican, but rather those who insist upon torturing their relatives with QAnon conspiracies... If those relatives don't want to put up with that behavior, don't want to put their children or their friends at risk of being discriminated against by these people, then they should perhaps consider being less terrible.” https://t.co/6VXfkXlmrc
Won't Someone Think Of All The Bigots Who Won't Be Invited To Christmas This Year?

Dennis Prager will.

It appears, at least in my little archipelago of Mastodons, that there's a Great Quote-Tweet debate happening.

One person I respect asked pointedly to see data that proved QTs were abusive. Since I've been researching affordances of social media platforms I pulled some bits and bobs out of my hideous pile of papers and thought I'd share some insights with y'all about this question.

Cards on the table: I think QTs are a net negative. But nothing's ever simple.

#8 - Unlearn purity culture

This is a big one guys. What is purity culture? It's referenced a lot, but I think a lot of you don't know what it is.

In short, purity culture is when people take many nuanced situations and try to divide them into black and white categories. There's the Good category and the Bad category. The problem is, life is not in black and white. You can't put a neat line down the middle between good and bad.

After a month of shows, (minus two which vanished in the Great Green Room Flood of 2022), I lay Bob Wallace to rest. I am pleased and greatly relieved. Now to get this hernia fixed 🙂
If you’re afraid that books might change someone’s thinking, you’re not afraid of books, you’re afraid of thinking.
I'm helping make a design system component library for Healthpartners (http://www.healthpartners.com). it's written using Stencil and hosted in Storybook. Does this seem like a topic people would like to learn more about? I sometimes wonder if I should give a talk somewhere... #stenciljs #storybook #designsystems

I have discovered that I have been singing and dancing with a hernia, which explains why it hurts. What am I going to do? Take some ibuprofen and keep on singin' and dancin'

Thread.

Q: “Republicans enact policies that hurt their own constituents.

So why do people vote for them?”

A: It has to do with the purpose of government.

For some people, purpose of government is to help people. We think fairness is possible and the government's job is to create fairness.

Others have a different view.

They think there’s a natural order: Some people belong on top; others at the bottom.

They think people with money and power deserve their money and power.

Posting on the birdsite felt like shouting into the void. And it made me anxious, with all the fighting and bad news. So I deleted it a while ago for my mental health. So far this place feels better!
