TLDR; The PSF has made the decision to put our community and our shared diversity, equity, and inclusion values ahead of seeking $1.5M in new revenue. Please read and share. https://pyfound.blogspot.com/2025/10/NSF-funding-statement.html

The PSF has withdrawn a $1.5 million proposal to US government grant program

In January 2025, the PSF submitted a proposal to the US government National Science Foundation under the Safety, Security, and Privacy of Op...

Security conference talks fall into two categories
* we designed a distributed entropy siphon to perform a black-box hypervisor side channel escape and chain-load a persistent rootkit into the CPU cache
* we looked behind the sofa and found an entire industry of products/services that have made no attempt at security at all and are therefore vulnerable to the most basic issues that we've been finding in everything for the past 30 years, and no-one else had bothered to look.
Upping my rusty frontend skills with excellent talks from @jensgro and @thw at #unKonf. I'm just 10 to 15 years out of frontend development... "Some" things changed in the meantime.

Minor medical situation on the flight and it’s cool that my wife is able to jump up and help out when they ask for a licensed medical professional.

One day someone will need a regular expression so I stay ready.

In the tram towards #unKonf with my trusted php Benelux tote bag. Still missing that conference...

On my way towards Mannheim for #unKonf. Looking forward to meet @shochdoerfer @sebastian @movetodevnull @Skoop and many more again.

I might use the train ride to prepare some golang related talk even.

Look who joined the DHH shitshow. Once again I’m glad I’m not a Laravel user, lol.

Varnish Cache project to change its name to Vinyl Cache with after the next release (after today's 8.0.0, in March), per @bsdphk:

We have tried to negotiate with Varnish Software for many months about this issue, but their IP-Lawyers still insist that Varnish Software owns the Varnish Cache name, and at most we have being offered a strictly limited, subject to their veto, permission for the FOSS project to use the ā€œVarnish Cacheā€ name.

We cannot live with that: We are independent FOSS project with our own name.

So we will change the name of the project.

The new association and the new project will be named ā€œThe Vinyl Cache Projectā€, and this release 8.0.0, will be the last under the ā€œVarnish Cacheā€ name. The next release, in March will be under the new name, and will include compatibility scripts, to make the transition as smooth as possible for everybody.

For many of the days of my career, the most important task I’ve had was to say ā€œnoā€.

It’s really more like ā€œNo, not that way, but let’s find a solution.ā€

Saying ā€œyes, here’s some code to do the thing you asked, even though you should DEFINITELY not be doing that thing because it’s dangerous for you and your usersā€ is how someone (or some machine) who is not [yet] good at this job acts. https://mastodon.social/@raiderrobert/114947733968044699
