Hello! 👋 I cover housing and business in the Midwest from my home in Chicago for @ProPublica.

I've reported on dodgy home-lending programs, rent-setting algorithms, and the long aftermath of the 1968 King riots.

I'm also a data reporter 🧮 and Python 🐍 programmer.

As the New Year approaches I ‘ll be raising a glass to salute the thousands of scientists and technicians who designed, built, and launched this window on the universe and cheering on the folks who are using it to discover new wonders. 🥂

2023 Politics of Emerging Technologies Mini-Conference at APSA Expression of Interest

***DEADLINE TO RESPOND: December 22, 2022*** If you are interested in presenting a paper, please fill out page 2 of this form. Following the success of our inaugural Politics of Emerging Technologies Mini-Conference, we are excited to organize the 2023 Mini-Conference. We invite panels and papers at the intersection of politics, policy, and emerging technologies. We define emerging technologies broadly to include any technology that involves radical novelty, relatively fast growth, prominent impact, and uncertainty and ambiguity [1]. Some examples of research topics include (but are not limited to) digital surveillance in public and private spheres; cybersecurity and international relations; the ethics and governance of artificial intelligence; automation and the future of work; the governance and regulation of social media platforms; military and civilian uses of emerging technologies; privacy law and policy; biosecurity and the prevention of future pandemics; and digital media and the spread of misinformation. This year we especially welcome submissions related to the theme of the 2023 American Political Science Association Annual Meeting: “Rights and Responsibilities in an Age of Mis- and Disinformation.” See more information here: https://connect.apsanet.org/apsa2023/ We welcome theoretical and empirical works from a variety of subfields and methodological approaches. We are open to researchers submitting full panels or individual papers that we will organize into panels based on similar themes and/or methodologies. Furthermore, we invite individuals and groups to submit papers/panels that may focus on different regions, states, or non-state actors regarding emerging technologies. Academic and non-academic professionals (junior, mid-level, and senior) are encouraged to submit their abstracts. In addition, we welcome others who can serve as panel chairs and discussants. We are submitting this Mini-Conference proposal to the 2023 APSA Annual Meeting. If our proposal is not accepted as part of the Annual Meeting program, we plan to host the Mini-Conference at the University of California, Los Angeles as a pre-APSA event. There is the possibility that the Mini-Conference will have hybrid (i.e., Zoom) components. In addition, we will organize a social event or happy hour during the 2023 APSA Annual Meeting where participants can connect with each other. [1] Rotolo, Daniele, Diana Hicks, and Ben R. Martin.
