I'm speaking in 2 days about rethinking open source sustainability from scratch. The problem is it still feels unsolvable

I got into OSS because I discovered the joys of sharing my code, contributing to projects, meeting others who love the same

For OSS to be sustainable, the happy emotional side must be preserved first. It's only then that you can start to take on financial sustainability

As for the financial side, I've reviewed every model I've found and we still need much better ones sadly

I want to highlight the prolific OSS work of @adamchainz - he's the author of 50+ actively-maintained high-quality Python packages. Go to https://github.com/adamchainz and see all the code he's generously gifted the community 🫶

Then support his efforts and get his books. I got this one last year and found it quite helpful

Super honored that Adam is also a technical reviewer for the forthcoming Two Scoops of Django 6. His feedback is now completely transforming the next edition as we work through it

Happy holidays, AirDragon 0.4.0 is out!

New tags: Form, H3, Input, Link. More coming. We realize we could churn out every tag fast with AI, but that's not how we do things. @danielfeldroy and I are taking a careful curation approach to ensure each AirTag works exactly how we want. Slow and steady.

Plus an AGENTS file to get AI to generate nice website layouts using Air, AirDragon, and BasecoatUI. You feed it to Claude Code or whatever and tell it what UI to build.

Season's greetings all, enjoy! Yeah you can also "pip install deckthehalls" and then run it

Revisited the Cookiecutter modernization effort that
@danielfeldroy
and I had started this summer. Yeah! We still want to do it!

First comes getting it into good shape. Baby steps, we just dropped Python 3.9 since it reached EOL at the end of October

Then comes the fun. I'm overflowing with ideas for creative new features after the break. You have no idea what a treat you're in for if you're a Cookiecutter user.

Also coming is a solid path for sustainability so I don't burn out again

To maximize creative output, it takes shifting from a group mindset of everyone feeling they need to provide honest critique to one where everyone builds collaboratively upon each others' ideas or work.

People produce their best creative work when they feel safe from judgment and able to take giant risks.

"I see too many _people_ without ethics or morals getting enabled [by AI] to do much more damage to society with less effort." -- Guido van Rossum in https://www.odbms.org/blog/2025/10/beyond-the-ai-hype-guido-van-rossum-on-pythons-philosophy-simplicity-and-the-future-of-programming/ (found via @adamchainz and @lpryszcz)

Yes, I see this too and it's awful.

At the same time, I'm witnessing AI empowering young women outside the US to get unstuck while working on their Python projects. Those who couldn't get help before now can. That's progress.

Now the good folks using AI just have to outnumber the bad.

So @danielfeldroy and I are starting up our Feldroy (formerly Two Scoops Press) email newsletter for the first time in years.

We're going to share weekly updates about what we're doing, and dev advice/opinions we're shy to post online.

If you want in for free before we make it a paid list, PM me your email - you can't subscribe online yet

We promise to do everything to make it worthwhile. It'll get better every week as we figure out what works

Also, what are your favorite dev newsletters?

Just moved over from vis.social to mastodon.social

Hope nothing broke
