Last Friday was the JWST Cycle 2 deadline and it was a record-setter - we don't have the completely final numbers yet, but here are some preliminary stats (all subject to possible minor changes):
1602 total proposals including 1462 General Observer for ~36,500 hours. That's a ~7:1 over-subscription. That's also ~400 more than in Cycle 1 and beats the HST highest number of 1298 proposals in Cycle 7. There's 31 Survey proposals, 4 pure parallels, and 105 Archival proposals. JWST will be busy!
Amazingly high signal-to-noise spectra of galaxies at high redshift enabled by JWST NIRSpec! Wow! Credit: Emma Curtis-Lake and the JADES team.

One last photo highlight of the week: the fearsome 1,800 metre high Eiger Nordwand as seen from Kleine Scheidegg, the famous & appropriately named Hotel Bellevue in the foreground.

This mountain has lived in my dreams since I was young, reading of the first British ascent by Chris Bonington & Ian Clough in 1962. It’s always a thrill to see it in person.

Also thinking of Ueli Steck & his stunning 2h23m solo ascent in 2015, 18 months before his death on Everest.
