There are still a lot of questions swirling around the executive order on "dangerous gain-of-function" research that Trump signed yesterday. I've written up for
Science Magazine what we know so far and what it might mean for infectious disease research.

Late evening at the end of a long (in many ways) weekend. Slight back to school blues so I'm consoling myself with a Japanese Rockabilly cover version of a Smiths classic.

The singer struggles a bit with the pronunciation but I think it adds to the charm. Always makes me smile this one.

Radioactive Kids - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

@TwoClownsEating I’ve photographed the rockabilly gangs who dance at our local summer festival for over a decade. It doesn’t matter how hot and humid the weather they turn out to preen and pose, enjoy each other’s company, but above all else to dance to classics played over tiny, tinny speakers. Before it all kicks off groups gather, have speeches about not getting too rowdy and cleaning up litter. They then have a collection for UNICEF. Good hearts!

@wilpercy

Something I've always found fascinating and endearing about Japanese folk is their commitment to their chosen subcultures. They really go all out and can be quite obsessive.

Have you seen the film Mystery Train by Jim Jarmusch? The Japanese couple in that, visiting Memphis, really captures the obsession/fascination with Americana, and foreign subcultures generally.

(That movie also has one of my favourite musical artists acting in it, Screamin Jay Hawkins)

@TwoClownsEating I haven’t seen Mystery Train but now it’s on my radar, as is Screamin’.
One of my students has made several trips to Graceland and often sports a gold necklace with the word, Elvis. She’s a widow in her mid 70’s.
Dedication, that’s what you need.
@TwoClownsEating It’s the last day of the Golden Week holiday. I’ve found Mystery Train on Netflix and Perfect Days on Prime. It’s raining. The stars align!

@wilpercy

I assume you've seen Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes, a Japanese "one shot" film. If not it's only about an hour and is fun.

@wilpercy

This is gold. In context, he'd had his records banned for being "cannibalistic" (wow, racism much).

He turned up on 1960s British TV and totally leaned into the stereotype. Talking gibberish, bone through his nose and everything.

This is more Punk than anything the Sex Pistols ever did. 10 years before them and no white privilege behind him.

He actually got this on British TV!

Screamin Jay Hawkins - I put a spell on you

Every time I watch this I just can't believe it happened. Incredible on so many levels.

@TwoClownsEating @wilpercy

The guy was a genius on so many levels and yet he's always reduced to this song.

@holger @wilpercy

That happens. Ian Dury similarly. He made some incredible work but for many he was an unserious, one hit wonder.

@TwoClownsEating @holger thanks for the Mystery Train tip. It was fun. I enjoyed the Far from Yokohama story most (that trick with the lighter!) but it all had a satisfying circularity to it reminiscent of Pulp Fiction. Screamin made me laugh. Then I watched Perfect Days which surpassed high expectations.

@wilpercy @holger

I watched Perfect Days a little while ago. It's very gentle, I enjoyed it a lot. Me and Mrs B really enjoyed seeing all the lovely public toilets in Tokyo 😂

Night on Earth is another Jim Jarmusch film that might be interesting. Similar premise, three stories taking place at the same time in different cities. The one in Rome is very funny.

SJH in Mystery Train is very funny. I don't think he's even acting.

@TwoClownsEating @holger I want to try the one where you lock the door to switch the glass to opaque.
Will look out for Night on Earth.

@wilpercy @holger

Thats even more scary than the push button automatic toilet doors on trains.

@TwoClownsEating

Thanks for posting, this made me smile.

@TwoClownsEating Yeah, great version of this song, Mat. Hope your week got off to a good start. Here’s another cover of “There Is A Light…” by the Swedish band The Baboon Show — more punk. https://song.link/de/i/1438831518
