@artfloral Hi, I'm Blind, and work in the arts. I'm a musician myself but do consulting work to help make dance, other visual arts, and astronomy more accessible. You're going through a dramatic change but I hope that along the way you'll find some unexpected richness.
Friends, asking for accounts on Mastodon or organizations that are about low vision resources. I am losing my sight (not from macular degeneration) and want to connect with others like me. It's pretty devastating for someone who's been an artist and photographer all my life, but accessibillity options are greatly improving. Currently using Zoom, Magnify and VoiceOver on the iphone. Looking for connection and inspiration and your well wishes too! #lowvision #accessibility

It's the time of year when my neighbourly friends pilfer scented flowers for me and bring me little bouquets to scent my apartment and delight my soul. Here's a photo of a slightly drooping arrangement. In considering the alt text, I began with an AI generated description as I always do as a Blind person posting photos. inspired by all of you inclusion valuing folk who spend time and energy on conveying challenging visual info in words, I thought hard about the scent. It would be an easy default to say, and the scent is indescribable, but you guys have encouraged me to level up, because you always try to describe even the indescribable.

If I weren't on Fedi, I think I would feel a lot more despair over the world right now, & it's not just the fact that there are a lot of like-minded folks here nor that in many corners of it we try to cultivate a culture of kindness, as great as those things are.

It's such a fucking relief in the age of AI & walled gardens & information control to have an Internet space created by & for human beings. Not for corporations. Not for bots. Not for data harvesting.

An Internet for Humans.

idk how to make my mastodon as meaningful as my bluesky but i like it more than bluesky so i'm just gonna post here as if i have the audience anyway and link people to it when i make announcements and shit i guess

not unlike minecraft launcher's early use of tumblr ?

This weekend I was telling someone that I started buying earthquake insurance when my husband's illness prompted my retirement.
While making excuses for why I would purchase such a high deductible expensive policy I said that in the event of an earthquake that toppled our house I would be homeless without insurance coverage.
He said I have so many friends I wouldn't be homeless.
It made me think about how much my friends mean to me and how those connections get me through some tough days. I don't expect to need a couch to sleep on but I do know I wouldn't be alone in a crises and I wouldn't want that for anyone else.
I've come to depend on Mastodon for a daily dose of kindness. A virtual support system of real people.
To be a part of this community is an honor a privilege and a life saver.
Thank you from the fullness of my heart.
(Not the bottom but the whole heart)
Hugs.
California’s new grid-connected batteries, installed over the last 36 months or so, are the equivalent of a dozen new nuclear power plants. If California had installed a dozen nukes in a couple of years, you’d know about it because people would be protesting and counter protesting. And the fact that we in California are now powering the grid with what is essentially stored solar energy during the peak demand (which is typically around 7:00PM), producing as much as 40 percent of the peak capacity requirements, hasn’t made a ripple. Does the fact that batteries are essentially metal boxes that don’t pose a threat make it non-newsworthy?
