This weekend I was telling someone that I started buying earthquake insurance when my husband's illness prompted my retirement.
While making excuses for why I would purchase such a high deductible expensive policy I said that in the event of an earthquake that toppled our house I would be homeless without insurance coverage.
He said I have so many friends I wouldn't be homeless.
It made me think about how much my friends mean to me and how those connections get me through some tough days. I don't expect to need a couch to sleep on but I do know I wouldn't be alone in a crises and I wouldn't want that for anyone else.
I've come to depend on Mastodon for a daily dose of kindness. A virtual support system of real people.
To be a part of this community is an honor a privilege and a life saver.
Thank you from the fullness of my heart.
(Not the bottom but the whole heart)
Hugs.
@NorcalGma2 Thank you for being here and making our lives better every day.

@NorcalGma2

We love, y'all Grandma and have your back. πŸ’œ

@NorcalGma2 I suppose I assumed that most people in CA had such insurance? At least people with a significant property value (read most houses)
@pixelpusher220
No. It costs twice as much as my homeowners insurance and has a very high deductible. We always assumed that we would repair or rebuild ourselves if the house was damaged and didn't buy the earthquake coverage. My husband built the house. Now we wouldn't be physically able to do the work. Even with the deductible I would be able to contract out the rebuild with insurance. Our house is very solid and has withstood some major quakes but you never know.

@NorcalGma2 understood. Even with a 20% deductible, that puts a soft ceiling on the recovery.

I still hate that we let ins companies parcel out the *known* risks into separate policies. That's why we buy it!

@NorcalGma2 I keep this on my refrigerator because I’ll take all the kindness I can get, and I appreciate every time.

@NorcalGma2 And I don't doubt that Mastodon would rally to your aid as well. You are much beloved here. :)
@NorcalGma2 What a wonderful thing to say, and so very true. So glad we are all here for each other.

@NorcalGma2

You are a treasure here, and your presence & toots are delights.

Thank you for being here. ❀️ For sharing all of Summer's love and joy πŸ’›. For sharing beautiful nature pictures πŸ“Έ. And for sharing memories, filled with love and kindness. After Arwen's passing, I got some of my daily Labrador dosage from you and Summer. And now that Koa is in my life, I still enjoy all of the blonde gall's pics! 😁 Fankoos πŸ’œ 🐾 🌹
@NorcalGma2 you are a lovely person to be virtual friends with, so back atcha on being happy to part of this supportive community

@NorcalGma2 I too have earthquake insurance. And also: Your friend is right. No way would your friends here (and elsewhere) allow you and Summer and Summer's pal to be homeless.

I find it hard to explain to people who are not on Mastodon just how my community here serves as that virtual support system you mention. But it sure does.

And it's people like you that make Mastodon something special.
