@mikeseye and yeah, that epiphany led more or less directly to my quitting that job, and ultimately tech as a career, because without ever really intending to i had inadvertently become a specialist in supporting Big Data back-end systems, which field is going to remain evil until it gets properly regulated, which it ain't
@mikeseye someday i ought to tell you about how i figured out, after the fact, that i had played a very small supporting role (on the bad guys side) in the Rohingya genocide, just from working for a company that had fb as one of its bigger customers.

Albuquerque's Police Chief Says Cops Have a 5th Amendment Right To Leave Their Body Cameras Off: Even more troubling, Medina said he "purposefully did not record because he was invoking his 5th Amendment right not to self-incriminate." Since "he was involved in a traffic collision," he reasoned, he was "subject to 5th Amendment protections." Think about the implications of that argument. Body

Now I ask y'all a serious question: how the fuck do you go about writing lyrics as sad as that?

Ani Difranco lyrics:

You keep telling me I'm beautiful, and I feel a little less so each time

Your love is so colorful, it flashes out like a neon sign

And I finally go out where the sky is dark enough to see stars. And I find I miss no one, just listen to the swishing of distant cars

One of the weirdest arguments by anti-nuclear folk I hear is how nuclear is so absurdly expensive it can only survive based on subsidies.

Like all good lies, it has a kernel of truth: building new units can be expensive. But operating them is extremely cheap. After they've been paid off, they become the single most cheapest source of energy, bar none.

It doesn't even make logical sense to claim nuclear can only survive on subsidies. Like, how would they survive in the first place?

@Beeks Well, Thomas Piketty seems to be working on the problem, in his own weird way. Check it out.

Yes,

rising and large wealth inequalities lead to societal breakdowns [according to Graeber and Michael Hudson]

other ages evolved stability via 25-50 year scheduled debt forgiveness systems (Jubilees, and resets upon new monarchs) and peaceful wealth redistribution (progressive taxation)

rising wealth inequality makes our societies fragile and prone towards civil wars. And 'strong men'

"Refugees" is an extreme of wealth inequality thus 'strong men'

Mariame Kaba writes “Hope is a discipline.”

How are you practicing hope? Where do you put your hope during lengthy troubled times?

@Beeks Stopping it may no longer be an option, but preventing it from being much worse than it will get if we continue to do as little as we have been doing is still very much an urgent option. @brewsterkahle @arkiuat
