Associate Professor in Comm Tech at University of Connecticut, Fulbright fellow ('21) in Computer and Applied Cognitive Science at Universität Duisburg-Essen.
Researching social media use since 2007; currently remixing what that means post-tenure.
I also love time away from work by running races, escaping to the woods to hike, and playing violin in a local symphony.

Hi! I don't really post over here, but have an account for engaging at conferences and in specific conversations that pop up here. These days I'm most active on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/anneo.bsky.social

It felt great to prioritize research and coffee time with a friend this afternoon and shove all other obligations on my to do list to the side! And now it feels not so great to realize my day is effectively over and I somehow have to finish all these to do's tomorrow? 🤔
Nothing like an internal funding opportunity to spur you to rapidly pull together your next research project!
It's only an algorithm if it comes from the algorithm region of France, otherwise it's just sparkling conditionals.
Today in CMC class we talked about social influence, developing social norms online, and memes. At the end I had them create their own memes that met some CMC criteria. Looking through them now and having a rather enjoyable afternoon.

Tip in an email from the local wild bird store: "Birds are always looking for food; whether they are eating it or not."

Same.

Are you a trans, gender non-conforming, or intersex individual, currently a grad student or postdoc in STEM?

Do you need $2-5K for research (including travel, assistants, supplies) or conference/workshop attendance?

If you download your #Twitter archive it arrives wrapped as a static HTML page, which is not very useful for doing anything with, and worse: it requires the original account to be still active to do useful things like enlarge the images since they use t.co links.

So here's a #Python script to convert a Twitter archive to #markdown or other formats: https://github.com/timhutton/twitter-archive-parser

Now you can archive your tweets in any way you want.

I thought about moving to a more topic-focused server, but a quick pivot chart shows that even though I'm following nearly only researchers, for now most are on the same mastodon.social server as me.
In my CMC class tomorrow we are talking about social norms in CMC. I'm using Twitter migration to Mastodon and all the explicit instructions for how to behave over here as a prime example of we see these online norms get built (now that we've developed them over time and have to decide in a new instant what they should be ideally)
