Add the numbers up, HTTP polling is going to cost everyone more money, resources used, energy needed, storage needed (logs etc), etc — this feature is highly problematic on any host that doesn’t invest in a custom polling solution ASAP.

This was rushed and unfortunately not well thought out in terms of impact to the web on an IRL environmental and shared server level.

WordPress 7.0’s Real-Time Collaboration Heads Into RC1 With Key Questions Still Open

A new database table has Matt Mullenweg’s blessing, a pull request is passing checks, and RC1 is on Thursday. It’s been a week.

I've been contemplating to write this post for months. The reason I haven't is the exact thing I want to write about. And that's just silly. So here goes: Fear of voicing the unpopular opinion within the WordPress ecosystem https://coenjacobs.com/blog/fear-voicing-unpopular-opinion-within-wordpress-ecosystem/

WE didn't choose to fight WP Engine. YOU did.

WE don't stand to gain anything from the fight. YOU and YOUR company's bank accounts do.

WE'RE trying to make a living. YOU'RE trying to ruin us.

YOU weaponized http://WordPress.org
. WE didn't.

WE are collateral damage.

The fact that Matt Mullenweg thinks it's okay to use the official WordPress.org X/Twitter account to throw insults is such a fucking bad look.

How can we take anything he says or does seriously, when he acts like a clown.

Sometimes saying nothing is a good idea. Matt M. you should try that sometime.

WPackagist got acquired by WP Engine: https://wpengine.com/blog/wp-engine-acquires-wpackagist/, ensuring a critical piece of developer infrastructure stays free and maintained. Official @WordPress response now calling them a "parasite" and "cancer." That's exactly why the WordPress ecosystem has trust problems.

Unfortunately I think there's an issue getting an update from #GitUpdater 12.23.x to 12.24.0 and a manual update will be required. Be sure to refresh cache before the manual update.

You can also use branch switching to switch to the master branch, even if you are currently on the master branch.

This can be done via the update webhook and adding `&plugin=git-updater` to the end of the webhook. The base for the webhook is found in the Remote Management tab.

Sorry 😞

The Upfront Investment That Saves 10,000 Hours

There's a pattern in tech where people mock the setup cost of automation without accounting for the return. I spent a day building a Grunt-based WordPress bootstrapper in 2013. Fortune 500 companies are still running code built on that foundation today.

This is a little embarrassing to share, but I'd rather someone else be able to spot a dangerous scam before they fall for it. So, here goes.

One evening last month, my Apple Watch, iPhone, and Mac all lit up with a message prompting me to reset my password.

Maintaining open source projects is mostly a thankless task, but very occasionally a very kind soul drops their appreciation and thanks, and it really does make your day 🥰

▶️ Take a moment sometimes to thank the maintainers of open source projects you value!
